Gents Question on the Soviet VDV head wear. Did they wear the jump helmets for just the jump and then wear a more traditional helmet or did they continue with the jump hat ? ta Keith |

Keith, I doubt if the VDV guys would fight in those jump helmets. They offer no ballastic protection and would interfer with your hearing. Likewise, an elite unit would not want to wear non-elite equipment like the standard Russian steel pot. The other issue is weight. In the infantry every ounce counts. Carrying both a jump helmet and a steel pot would be a pain in the butt. For the weight of the steel pot you can carry a couple of extra magazines.Personally, I think that just like the Royal Marines or Parachute Regt. the beret would be what would be worn. One thing about elite troops, if they earned it, they'll wear it. The only pictures I've seen of confirmed VDV in action or on exercise are wearing berets but, like the British paras and RM, I'd expect them to wear helmets. Dragon produced a box of Soviet VDV featuring helmets. Also recent pictures from exercises and Georgia shoe only helmets. |

Wargamers usually want them in berets though, so as to distinguish them on the table top :-) |

That's what mine do, Geoff. I'm quite sure that they would wear a helmet in reality, but mine go in their berets. |

True Geoff. I've toyed with buying some of your Brits I'm berets for that reason. Can't decide between red or green though. |

I always figured it's like those WW1 American boyscout hats. They wouldn't go into the trenches with those, but gamers want them because they look cool. :) |

Can't decide between red or green though Well that's easy, you do of course need twice as many, so you can do both Royal Marines and Paras… |

Or do them mainly in helmets with the odd one in berets, which you repaint as needed. Ahem. |

Or do them mainly in helmets with the odd one in berets…. And of course we offer postwar Brits in both helmet and beret now. |

I know Geoff. Just got to paint all of those T64Bs and VABs I bought in February first. Might get some Hip Cs though. |

Not to mention you can do UNIT for Doctor Who. Don't think those boys ever wore helmets, at least in the old show. |

Most images identified as VDV are, of course, in beret. That may be partly because it is the easiest way to identify them in a photo, and anyone in a helmet is presumed to be just another soldier. However there appears to be some evidence that helmets are used:
I suspect, despite the weight, that the shrapnel/ballistic protection offered by the helmet outweighs the weight issue, and they are carried and worn once on the ground, but the berets come out as soon as the shooting stops. |
