Some of you may recall my previous scratchbuilt Ringworld/Halo:

Well, I had a wild hair last night and decided to make one for 3D printing. This took about 3 hours total, and while I can see some room for improvement, I think it isn't too bad!

Look! It's Ringapore!

And, for some reason, Houston:

Looks cool!

Thanks for sharing.

Nice! Is there any way to manufacture the ring in segments, so that modellers may adjust the diameter of the model to suit their own needs? Thanks for sharing.

If it was segmented it could be made as survived sections for after detonation

It seems to me that segments would facilitate manufacture, but could be tricky to assemble. They might need to be assembled around a form until the glue sets up. There would also be gaps to fill between the segments.

Yes.

No.

If you change the number of segments, you don't have a circle anymore. You'd produce a "scalloped" effect.

The real problem with the segments idea would be that the ends of the segments would have to be angled specifically and precisely to create the circle. It's possible, just not too likely to turn out well.

Does the model print with the colored interior?

Nice. Probably needs to be about the radius of the moon to scale with the starship mini, though. ;)

Really, I spend all that reading biting my tongue, and now all I have is mangled mouth… ;->=

Remember, it's not scaled to the mini, it's scaled to the imaginary microscopic dot, above the center post, representing the ship.

Doesn't it need a star at the center?

Well, to be fair, if you scaled down the "real" Ringworld proportional to its described dimensions, it would be like using dental floss to make a ring that was 600 feet wide! Come back to the light, people. Come back to the light.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP22 Apr 2015 11:01 a.m. PST

We would, if we had a star in the center. Mighty dark otherwise… ;->=

Yepper, missed that completely.

Well played, sir. Well played!

THAT is cool. Very nice work!

Also my understanding is that the ring wouldn't have to have a star at the center. The ring in Halo, for instance, was smaller and just orbited the star; it was offset from the solar system plane and rotated, so there was a day/night cycle.

I believe the `Orbitals` in Ian Banks culture novels work in much the same way.

"Yepper, missed that completely." meant that I'd completely missed the scale of width to circumference, making ME the played… ;->=

Absolutely! But if we're talking about Ringworld-size rings, there will be some serious tidal issues, and the 'night' side of the ring will be a lot closer to the primary, causing me to wonder about heat issues.

However, I'll be the first to declare my lack of any useful physics knowledge. Just having fun.

We are talking about 'science FICTION' aren't we? Can't the ring just be like a 'marker'…..???? Just like for planets, large asteroids and moons and….wait…THAT'S no MOON!!!
