I am looking at our next big game for the author's. This will be an escorted convoy scenario were the route is not fully understood by the intercepting force. So the question is on a reasonably good surface but with some potential risk from outside forces what is the typical vehicle spacing? For artistic reasons the minimum spacing is set at 60m and from some reading of WWII 140m (about 10 vehicles per mile was wide enough not to prompt air attack or at least minimise it's effects. Clearly getting the spacing right is important and I have to admit it seemed outside scope when we originally wrote MG hence the question We had never considered it plausible to fight over several kilometers of road or even that this could be adequately represented on a table top. |

Spacing is situation dependent. The closer the terrain, the closer the spacing. The air and ambush threat also played a factor. Vehicle spacing could be as little at 10 m in dense terrain like jungle roads. 50-100 m was normal for Central Europe. |

Much depends on the terrain, trg and tactical situation. The loggies will have been trained in convoy drills, the escort commander will then give a final brief and if possible conduct rehearsals. But distances as per Cold Steel. Once everything has been recce'd a role for the Recce is convoy escort. Tally Ho! |

Thanks cold steel its Northern Europe we do so that is an excellent guide to stop doing anything daft. Nickssomerset that's the point of the scenario one set of recce on convoy side has checked the route but the enemy has unsportingly turned up to find out what is going on and cause trouble. Inspired by a US army vignette but the area scaled down due to table limitations. |

IIRC from a discussion about convoy lights, the intended *night* spacing was ~60-180ft (~20-60m). If you were closer than that, you could see 4 individual lights and needed to back off, if you were farther away, you could only see one light and needed to close in. |
