The Spanish Army is the first expansion for Commands and Colors Napoleonics. It obviously adds the Spanish army as well as new terrain, a couple new French units and 18 new scenarios.

Jason, I have all the expansions except the Spanish, simply because I thought the Guerrilla rule a little out of place – I know I am probably getting a bit too pedantic about this, but the Guerrilla dimension of the campaign happened away from the battlefield.

I know they need a mechanic to 'highlight' the Spanish forces, I just wonder whether it should at the very least have been called something else.

Does the blurb at the start of the exclusive rulebook say anything that should cause me to think differently about this module?

I too own all but the Spanish expansion. I just could not see the need.

Why do they need a mechanic to 'highlight' the Spanish forces? You need Spanish troops for a number of battles in the Peninsula so just ignore the Guerilla rule if you think it unnecessary.

The Spanish forces are incredibly weak compared to the other armies in the Commands & Colors game system. The "Guerrilla rule" helps to offset that a little bit. (I've only just starting play the Spanish expansion; 2 games in, but I'm not liking it as much as the Russian expansion; at least with the Russians you have a chance.)

It is a fairly generic game and all the expansions have a rule or two that add a bit of flavour to the way that army works. I like what they have done to the other modules.

I am guessing the scenarios are balanced around the use of that mechanic.

That's fairly realistic then!

The "Guerrilla rule" helps to offset that a little bit.

I see no need for this rule!

Still can't see the point. The Guerilla rules as you describe it is unrealistic. I would ditch it. If you must have "flavour" (and judging by USAFpilot's post the Spanish already have pleanty of that!) I would suggest they should simply be relatively poor troops. It seems though that they already are …

I like to think that "Commands & Colors" is foremost a fun game (with Napoleonic flavor), not a simulation. It's like a game of chess, but with one side with inferior pieces. As such I've been playing the game with my brother this way: when we finish playing a scenario we set it up again and switch sides and play again. This keeps it fair and is an attempt to see who has the better strategy and tactics. I keep track of who wins each game and by how many victory points. We've played over 50 battles twice, and it is amazing how close our overall scores are. Thus far, after 30 battles (15 scenarios twice) with the Austrian expansion my bother has me by two games (16-14) but I have more victory points (158-153). Sometime you just get lucky with what cards you draw and how you role, but luck statistically balances out with the more games you play.
