Just finished posting an AAR of marathon length on my blog. It was our 4th and largest game so far with the Battlegroup Panzergrenadier Deluxe set of rules. link The BGPG series of rules still hold first place in our gaming group for 15mm company/battalion level games and that says a lot since we are a hard bunch to please. We always "tinker" with every set of rules and never end up playing them in "vanilla" mode. I expect that for future games we will use the core BGPG game mechanic feels which "right" and offers a good fun game. And then we'll "bolt on" the rules from Version 2 and Deluxe that we like, plus add some of our own. We are pleased that Dave Brown made both Version 2 and Deluxe! It's hard to choose between the two and we finally decided we couldn't, so we plan to use some of each. Maybe we'll call it BGPG Version 2.5 or perhaps Version 2D. <grin> Gary |

Excellent. You covered all the details well from your battle. I really have to play more of PG; fantastic set of rules. Keep it up. Kurtus |

This ruleset looks like what I may be wanting for my 15mm armies but I am confused on some things….. Is there a link for more information about this ruleset? I looked at the 2013 TMP post that had an excellent description about the game. However a link to Military Matters had 3 or 4 "scenario" books listed and the description for each appeared to have additional/optional rules as well as a price tag of $50 USD EACH. I am confused as to what is really needed to play this ruleset for any and all theaters of operations. Only the deluxe rules? V2 and deluxe? Do I also need the scenario books and their additional rule details? thanks for any info provided……….. |

The latest hardback (V3) is a complete set. All the scenario books are for either V1 or 2, so they include additional rules (snipers etc) that are all amalgamated in V3. As far as I know. I've no idea why the scenario books are listed as $50 USD each. They're about 48 pages long. |

Thanks MH Dee. I think i may have been confusing another ruleset with Battlegroup Panzergrenadier??? Is Battlegroup Kursk (with its supplements; battlegroup overlord, Bg barbarossa,Bg fall of the reich and Bg blitzkreig) a different ruleset? If so, how does BG Panzergrenadier compare with this other set (other than a lower price)? thanks |

It is indeed confusing and a little unfortunate that two very different sets of rules should have 'Battlegroup' as the first word in their title. BG Kursk contains the rules and information necessary to play games of the 'Kursk' period. If you want to play 1940, 1942 or 1945 era games then you will need the appropriate supplement and either Kursk or the slimline rulebook for the core rules. BG Kursk etc. is points based and can be fought as squad v squad and upwards. BG Panzergrenadier Deluxe (or just plain Deluxe as my group calls it) is a complete rulebook in its own right. No further supplements are necessary to fight any battles, though I understand that further national organisations may be released in the fullness of time. Deluxe has points but we never use them, preferring scenario based games. The smallest unit in Deluxe is a squad (a single base) and so squad v squad combat is not really possible. An evening's game for us is normally a battalion v a reinforced company for attack v defence. If you search the posts here on TMP you will find several that refer to these rules, some of which will give you more information than I have/can. |

thanks deephorse. I prefer a ruleset that doesnt require buying numerous supplements in order to play the various fronts/time periods of WW2. I was looking to field company sized combatants with squads (and a few specialized teams) being the smallest infantry unit with vehicles being represented as 1 vehicle per model. I will try and find more info on Deluxe as it may be what I am looking for. |

Buckeye, My initial attraction to the BGPG system was with Version 2. It is meant for company/battalion sized battles with a squad (or weapons team) as the base unit, and allows me to use all my existing 15mm FoW based stuff. That plus each Edition of the rules is stand alone with no supplements, so you can pick one and play it. The two biggest changes we make from the stock V2 and Deluxe rules are to play using the 20mm ranges for fire (just felt better to us) and to use 1:1 for guns and tanks. In the original BGPG rules one model tank represents 2-3 tanks. We find the game play rules are written for 1:1 for model vs model on the table so it works just fine that way. We are historical scenario gamers so we can make house rules to fit our fancy. BGPG incorporates command control which to our group is very important. After trying a bunch of rules sets, each with both positive and negatives for us, we settled on BGPG as the best of the lot so far. However, one man's gold is another man's garbage so it is all to individual taste. I can say the rules are well thought out and solid. While we first played with Version 2 (or Second Edition) we have recently also played with the latest, Deluxe, or Version 3. The basic game is the mostly the same for both. Our group likes some features of of each so it's likely we'll play a blend. For our group a reinforced company level game cannot be completed in 3 hours including setup so we do it over two or three sessions. However we are slow players. <grin> If you want a review of Version 2 (Second Edition) check this out: link If you want a very detailed blow-by-blow of a Version 2 game check this first game turn out with the remaining game turns available by clicking on "Sessions" in the topic header: link If you want information on the Deluxe (Version 3) rules check out the author's discussion on the BGPG Forum here. link and an AAR by the author showing game play at: link Also you can check out the four "Deluxe" AARs on my blog link in my first post (in Archives). Each shows Deluxe game play and has some comments at the end about the Deluxe rules. Hope this helps. Gary |
