Adrian Goldsworthy, Beat the Drums Slowly (2011), is about a British military officer who must protect both his soldiers and the woman he loves during a retreat while pursued by an army led by Napoleon himself; #2 in the author's Napoleonic Wars series.

This whole series is recommended. The author tells a good story and the historical and military detail is good. I recommend that you start with 'A True Soldier Gentleman' to understand the characters and the context.

I will second A-man's recommendation. Goldsworthy does tell a really good story and his detail is very good. I believe this comes from the fact that he is originally known for writing history books (I have three) of the Greek and Roman era. My opinion, but I think his attention to detail as a historian helped out in the writing of this series and one of the reasons the books are likeable.

Adrian Goldsworthy is both an excellent author and historian. His books on Rome are superb.

I haven't read any of his novels, but I would highly recommend him as both author and historian.

I have some of his history, and it is worth having on Rome, even if you're not that interested in the period. After reading his work, you might actually become interested in Rome and her army.
