This is an old book (novel)from 1949, about seven comrades in the French army during the Napoleonic Wars who finally meet their fate at Waterloo.
Sounds good to me.

It's excellent and I really enjoyed it when I read it years ago.

Delderfield is an excellent author and a pretty good historian.

It has the 'feel' of the period.

One of the best novels set in Napoleonic times that I have ever read

Hi Armand,

I 1st read it when I was about 11/12 yrs old (that's over 30 yrs ago… sighs!). I loved it then. Bought a copy out of nostalgia last year & re-read it. Still really enjoyed it. I reviewed it on the Amazon UK website a while back:

Seven Men of Gascony

He's a very good (but not great) writer. He's written several non-fiction titles on the Napoleonic era as well, like:

Napoleon in Love

… and a book about Napoleon's Marshals, called:

March of the 26

He was a professional novelist and an amateur historian. But I've benefitted from reading all the above-mentioned books. They're not the very best of fact or fiction, but they are all very enjoyable to read.

Best,

Sebastian

Went to my bookshelf to look it over again after reading this thread. Its gone!!!! I read this 30 years ago… great book. I've no idea what happened to my copy. I remember not being able to put it down.

Came across it in the late 70's when I was in college. It is a wonderful book.

Same as above, read it in my teen years and loved it. It has a great feel for the period.

Great book, thoroughly recommended.

Excellent book, I have my own copy also. What really impacted me was the Russian winter of 1812, absolutely horrific and mesmerizing at the same time.

Like previous responders, read it in my teen years and enjoyed it. Also read a few of Mr. Delderfield's other books and enjoyed them, particularly To Serve Them All My Days, about a school master in an English Private School.

Read it a long time ago it was great, also look for another book by him called "Too few for drums" that was great too.

You fellows have done it to me. I've just ordered four of Delderfield's novels for $.72 USD on Amazon. Of course, the shipping was 3.99 each. All are hardcover.

I ordered three of the Swann family saga that I read years ago and To Serve Them All My Days, because I'm a retired teacher and loved teaching.

Anyways, this is a good thing…

I've always thought it would make a great TV series, a Sharpe from the French side, if you will; and the ending rounds things off nicely in my view.

I agree with the comments above. A great read.

Haha, thanks guys. You got my interest. I just ordered it on Amazon. I had enjoyed his Imperial Sunset. Never knew this existed.

I too read the book way back in the late seventies and I remember it being a very good tome and well worth the time to read it.

Read it on holiday whilst in France this summer – lots of atmosphere – thoughtful battle scenes (I was able to visulise really well) and a proper story too.

I like his writing style. Read Imperial Sunset last year. Not deep, and reflects post WW2 views of Germany. Nonetheless a decent reading overview. It is a recommendation for anyone looking for an intro to the Napoleonic Wars.

A very topical thread revival. A friend has just given me a copy of this book and, based on the comments here, it looks as if it will be an enjoyable read.

G'Day Gents

yes I have to agree…the Seven Men Of Gascony was very good!

As was…

The Conscript of 1813 and its sequel at Waterloo!
