I've tried the shield transfers on the Victrix Greek and Roman plastic sets. For me it is a fiddle factor too far – I can't get it right and the results are frustrating. Has anyone tried painting the shields , and if so can you recommend a good design that is achievable by painting.

Those are rub-on transfers, yes?

You might try waterslide transfers, such as Veni Vidi Vici. They aren't as complex and elaborate, but they are very easy to use.

I found the ones from Little Big Man Studios to be easy to apply. The results are MUCH better than I can achieve with a brush!

LBMS transfers are works of art, but I don't think they are easy to apply. Normally, I use Veni Vidi Vici transfers. They are much more forgiving. In a sense I use the VVV transfers as templates and paint on additional detail as required.
