Which would you say were the most popular colonial wars in your local club/gaming experience ? Please name as many as you can, but in order of preference ? |

Zulu war, Northwest Frontier and the Plains Indian Wars. At least for our group. |

In my experience over the years, at local clubs and conventions, it is overwhelmingly the Zulu War and the Sudan, with the NW Frontier coming in a strong third. |

Boxer Rebellion, 2nd Boer War, "Darkest" Africa, Northwest Frontier… |

Zulu War by a country mile in my experience… though I have never seen the attraction myself – seems far too 2 dimensional to me, despite the colourful uniforms and the lingering appeal of a certain feature film. I think Boer War and Sudan Campaign offer much more interesting / balanced / challenging games… but each to their own, of course. |

Campaigns in the Sudan, the Anglo-Zulu War, Boxer Rebellion, Plains Indians wars, French Foreign Legion in North Africa, North-West Frontier. |

Popular is a relative term. Two of us have done the Sudan (1 in 15s and 1 in 25s), one has done Zulus, and one has done Boxers. There hasn't been anything a lot of people have jumped on the band wagon about; it is generally one man's project. |

My favorite is NW Frontier but I hardly ever put on games. Going by games played, it has to be the Sudan and Boxer Rebellion. |

Zulus is the first in my opinion, of course that was the first colonial game I ever played. The sword & the flame is what probably got a lot of gamers into colonial gaming. Second I think would be NWF, and third in our group would be French foreign legion. Plains Indians is always a favorite too. |

I enjoy games set in the Sudan in 1884-5, as well as in Egypt in 1882 the most. But the 1879 Anglo-Zulu war is also quite interesting. |

We do Sudan more than anything else in the Scramble for Africa period. |

Abyssinian War will be making a push soon as I finish figures. We can proxy Fuzzies and Ansar for Abyssinians. Alpini and Bersaglieri are at the Dip stage and Ascari are in the pipeline. If this makes it to a Poll I wonder how many votes the Abs will get. |

The Abyssinian War has a lot of potential. I wish the old line manufactured by Trent Miniatures many years ago was still available--rather wonky sculpts, but they had a lot of character. As for most popular, I'd definitely agree that the Zulu and Sudan wars take the top two slots. |

The good wargaming question: Is it popular because quite a lot of good stuff was produced, enticing more buying, or was lot produced because it is popular? Would others be is information/ films were more available together with minis? |
aegiscg47 | 18 Apr 2015 10:05 a.m. PST |
IMHO, the NWF needs to be at the top, just because the numerous wars, battles, and thousands of skirmish actions are fertile ground for gamers. The Sudan would be next followed by the Zulu War. Outside of the ability to use the armies of a lot of different nations, I could never understand the appeal of the Boxer Rebellion. It wasn't much of a war, the Chinese army was horrifically bad, and outside of the American, Russian, and Japanese troops, the remaining forces ranged from mediocre to pathetic. |

Yes Nwf now has lots of minis and have two sides with a good chance. Often that is. If there were minis in smaller scale, the Russians in central Asia did not have it all easy so could be interesting. |

Around here, the Sudan. There are other colonial wars?? |
piper909 | 19 Apr 2015 12:56 p.m. PST |
Locally, from what I've seen or participated in: Zulu war first, followed in rough order (people seem to rotate subjects regularly, depending on who's organizing the game and what rules are being used) by: NW Frontier; French in No. Africa; Boxer Rebellion; the Sudan. I've always enjoyed the Boxer games that have been played here, with TS&TF rules. The armies are colorful and varied, and if many units are not very good, that's part of the flavor and fun to me. Lots of bad troops flailing about can be a challenge! |

I was going to be a wise and say the Hut Tax War. Instead I would say Sudan, Boer War and NW Frontier come in the top around here. If you count the French and Indian War as colonial then it would come in pretty high, too. |

Zulu, Sudan, and Boxer Rebellion for me. |
