What rules and scale would you recommend for playing a Quatre Bras scenario on a 6 x 4 board – say aiming for a 2-3h game? More importantly, why? For context, I would like to host such a game using my large collection of 1/72 troops on 30mm frontage basing. Quatre Bras has always drawn me, and I have the right figures for it, but it seems to be between the battalion level (e.g. Shako) and grand tactical (e.g. V&B) scales. Cheers – Dave in Edmonton |

Age of Eagles, it is in the rule book. Plays fairly fast too. |

Shako 2, excellent game when played with these rules. |

Another endorsement for Shako 2. A great set of rules and they are perfect for this size of battle and your time frame. |

I've done it in V&B in an evening which works well for your 2-3 hour window. I would also suggest that Blucher will give a very similar feel to V&B in terms of troop and ground scale. |

Les Grognards, by Piquet. You can play in any of three ground scales, vary ubit quality to reflect your tastes, the card driven mechanics really allow for those embarassing moments for either side to come to pass. Good support group on yahoo, as well. |

Don Featherstones Wargames (modified). I am using each unit as a brigade sized unit. Each gun represents 12-16 guns or approximately 2 batteries. Units will change formation and maneuver like battalions so you can get to full flavor of Napoleonic warfare. The map is 6-4. We have not played the full game yet but the battle should last an evening. Probably around 3 hours with 6 players. |

For a 2-3 hour game you are probably looking at one of the grand tactical rules, with brigades as the standard unit. I have played it with Age of Eagles and Grande Armée. Both gave good games. Volley and Bayonet is another choice. There's even a scenario description in the AoE rule book (though this misses the critical hedge feature between Gemioncourt and la Materne). Though I'm not a particular fan of AoE it is probably the more suitable ruleset of the three for this game – though GA gave a wonderfully dramatic charge of the cuirassiers. Bijlandt's brigade is very big though, and you should probably break it down into more than one unit. For simplicity the Nassauers and Netherlanders in different units. It would make a good game with battalion units (like Shako) – but you'd be pushed for time – though I think Shako plays quite fast. |

It's a perfect sized battle for LFS. IIRC one of their specials has the scenario plus an optional scenario to have the French heavy cavalry arrive. |

Republic to Empire (R2E) would also work well. |
