Back in the day there was a fad for making periscopes, or buying kids ones, to help determine LOS in wargames. I think it started in WW2 games if I remember correctly.

Recently, I had a flash of inspiration that you could use the camera in the iPad to view things from 'ground level' and it works!

With the lens being at one corner edge of the machine its in very close contact with the table, so close in fact that you have to slip something under the edge to bring it up to eye level for a 28mm mounted figure!

You sometimes have to raise it a little bit more or turn it a bit to avoid the auto focus giving a nice picture of the nearest tree and a blurred background for everything else but on the whole it works pretty well.

I wouldn't suggest going out and buying an iPad or any other Tablet just for doing this but its interesting to do if you have access to one already. It's surprising what can't been seem from down there!

Dentist mirrors are on ebay for £1.00 GBP:87, would be good for getting down amongst trees but the view might be a bit small!

Yes…we've tried that as well. It's perfect if the miniature that's looking is near the table's edge. However, if it is in the middle of the table, the iPad doesn't work as well.
