Nearly completed my first French Brigade, looking forward to finishing it off and then moving on to some British for a change of colour…then back to more french for the division!! A few questions if anyone can help please- 1- For 28mm Figures, what is the advised dimensions for a French Flag? 2- For a 28mm battlefield, do you use 28mm scale buildings? 1 battalion is obviously scaled down in men…and while a 28mm building looks fine for WW2 skirmishing, in my mind it dosnt sound right for Napoleonics? Not tried it yet but just musing. I have the La Haye Sainte model and it will take up half the battlefield table!!! |

1- For 28mm Figures, what is the advised dimensions for a French Flag? French standards were approximatley 32ins square, so I would make it about 15mm square for 28mm 2- For a 28mm battlefield, do you use 28mm scale buildings? 1 battalion is obviously scaled down in men…and while a 28mm building looks fine for WW2 skirmishing, in my mind it dosnt sound right for Napoleonics? Not tried it yet but just musing. I have the La Haye Sainte model and it will take up half the battlefield table!!! Many gamers use the "one size down" rule of thumb for buildings so for 28mm I would suggest you use 20mm scale buildings. |

For flags of all kinds…French example (28mm is about 1/56): link |

I always make my flags oversize, like for 28mm figures I would use 40mm scale flags. Flags are a focal point for the unit so you want the flags to stand out. |

For large structures I go down to 15-20 mm. Here is the Hovels 15mm Hougomont with 28 mm figures.
Here we have 1/72 Airfix La Haie Sainte.
For a single building I will occasionally use a 28mm building as shown here.
It really all depends on the footprint of the structure, not the scale. You can see many 28 mm Napoleonics with different structures on my blog. fuentesdeonoro.blogspot.com John |

For 28mm Figures, what is the advised dimensions for a French Flag? French flags it depended on the time frame, at least according to Warflag. 4 feet for 1815. 32" for the period between 1808 and 1813 and more than 5 feet for the revolutionary period through the early empire. I read it quickly but go to the warflag link above in outlaw tor's post and read. It will answer all of your flag questions. It will provide most/all of your flags too! For 28mm Figures, what is the advised dimensions for a French Flag? I get buildings to near scale of my figures and then they represent several buildings. |

I've used actual scaled size for flags, but they look goofy if there's too much flagpole showing below them, so now I generally make them big enough to fit between the guy's hands and the finial. I cant recall any figures I've dealt with where the bearer was either holding the flag up over his head or had the pole grounded and the flag wrapped over his shoulder. I prefer to use buildings the right scale, for historical battles just fill the footprint of a town with buildings as appropriate for a built-up area. |

French flags during the Empire were typically smaller than those of other nations. As pointed out above, the size increased in 1815. I used to scale my flags so that they were correct to 1/56 – but, although correct, they are on the small side. Now I tend to scale my French flags about 25% over true scale and that helps with the visual. Personally I'd prefer to have one of those replica flags hanging on my wall than totally explode the scale of the flags on my miniatures. |

Different scale buildings to figures don't work for me, just looks odd. But if it works for you then happy gaming. |

No disrespect to those who don't share my views, but I'm one of those who thinks mixing scales up with regard to figures and buildings works very well and is a good idea. I know he was a diorama builder not a wargamer, but I believe even Capt. Siborne had to do just this (use different scales for figures, terrain and buildings) for his Waterloo models, and he went to no end of trouble to achieve what he thought to be 'scale perfection'. As far as wargames are concerned – and I realise I'm now chiming in, having first referred to dioramas, with a figure/terrain example on a very different scale – I'd like to suggest, Wayasen, that you have a look at the wargames terrain of Bruce Weigle:
The above is just a random Weigle pic I found when I googled 'Bruce Weigle'. He does his stuff in 1/300, using Heroics & Ros figures, with his own scratch-built terrain and buildings. I saw one of his games in the flesh at a show in the UK last year, and it looked really amazing, both realistic and very beautiful. I also think John de Terre Neuve's pics, above, look great, and show that the same idea does indeed work in the larger scales. Like you away Wayasen, I'm only building my armies at present (in 6mm and 10mm, both for Russia 1812). I've bought a fair amount of buildings already, from several manufacturers, all for the 6mm scale so far. But I feel they look too big, and will probably use the 6mm buildings for the 10mm terrain, and scratch-build at a smaller scale for the 6mm stuff. Haven't got as far as with dealing with flags yet, but will prob apply the same basic principle of going for a good look/effect, over going for exact accuracy of scale, when I do. |
