It's always near impossible for someone outside of the hobby to actually get it right unless they're given a wish list. But has anyone ever really surprised you and got the perfect wargaming gift?

A A$50 voucher for Eureka Miniatures from my wife. Bless her.

The missus got me a GW imperial sector and space hulk a few years ago.
It was right out the blue and she did not even check with me to see if they would go with what I had.
A very pleasant surprise indeed.
I still put it down to a full moon or supernatural anomaly.

My old boss, gave me £50.00 GBP worth of GW vouchers. Totally unexpected & a wonderful surprise.

When I was a kid in the 80's my Grandmother sent off for a whole load of Citadel miniatures to give me for Christmas.
It was a total suprise, and so unlike her usual presents. I was delighted, and every time I see those miniatures I think of her.

It was a mistake in inventory at my dad's store. They got three un-ordered Avalon Hill board games, for X dollars, and the balance was X dollars short. What to do? My dad bought them, and gave them to me for Christmas. I was eleven, and it changed everything.

An ex bought me one of those magnifiers with clips things. I suspect she wanted it for jewelry making…

My Father built a huge sand table for me.

My wife designed my table (12'x6') and had it built in the woodworking shop at the school where she worked at the time. "

A Thank You present from my sister for helping her move.

Wife gave me an optivisor. At the time I had some eye strain--now, about a decade later, it's an essential component of any painting job (second only to paint).

My wife built me a 3'x3' storage table with a plexiglas lid for storing HeroClix maps flat and playing on top.

A friend gave me a 1970's Russian military manual with cartoons of every uniform and badge officially authorised by all branches. The kicker was an inscription saying "the Soviet Union was having a going out of business sale and I thought of you…"

My old Rat Patrol boxed set, from my parents, as a wee tot.

Had lots of fun with it, but eventually everything got scattered to the wind.

My wife got me Victrix figures this year for Christmas.
Highlanders both line and flank, British line and flank, and British artillery….pretty cool thought I

A Warhammer Fantasy Goblin Bolt Thrower. It's the only surprise wargaming gift I've got but also was the gift that got me into wargaming.

Yeah my older brother bought me the Prince August Irish Wild Geese moulds and paints with I was a wee little thing (deadly dangerous for the age that I was, melting lead on a gas burner in a garage on my own but a hobby was born.

One Christmas my wife mail ordered me a bunch of 15mm houses…I was shocked and delighted…she's never repeated the feat unfortunately :(

Robert66617 Apr 2015 4:20 p.m. PST

She went away for the weekend and left me alone.

Weasel17 Apr 2015 4:21 p.m. PST

My wife got me the "Reds" board game, which was much appreciated.

We had looked at it in a store and after we left, she went back and bought it while I was in another store.

My wife told me to put back the new Arkham Horror and bought BattleCry for me.

Ivan DBA17 Apr 2015 11:17 p.m. PST

A set of hobby files from my mom. They were an actual surprise, as in I didn't even know such things existed until she gave me a set. Years later, I still use them on almost every figure.

Ragbones18 Apr 2015 4:41 a.m. PST

A hand-crafted 15mm Rorke's Drift with detailed interiors and a landscaped base made by Howard Whitehouse. Given to me as a Christmas present by my distinctly non-wargaming wife.

Von Trinkenessen25 Apr 2015 10:52 a.m. PST

My grandparents bought me age 12 Terry Wise's Beginner guide to Battlegaming.
43 years later the rest is history.
