A true LOL movie. If anyone believed a thing in that movie, they need to have their diploma revoked. |

"We can still ram them!" I hate that movie. |
Oddball | 16 Apr 2015 8:03 p.m. PST |
"We can still ram them!" That happens all the time in World of Tanks (aka world of clown cars) and that game is just like real tank battles. or is it more like playing the "Battle of the Bulge" movie? |
Korvessa | 16 Apr 2015 8:08 p.m. PST |
"We can still ram them!" When I was in the tank school way back in 1988, they were using us to experiment with the new computer simulators. The enemy got lucky and called an arty strike right on our head. The driver was alive, but had no vision. The gunner and the TC were both out too. I was the loader. Having nothing better to do, we stalked our opponent and rammed him – just like Telly. They just backed up and shot us. (again – it was a video simulation) |

Telly's M24 looks like it got hit by a laser cannon. |

Still love that movie. When Peiper roasts in the burning gasoline? A classic. Great flick. |

Here is another error from The Worst War Movie ever made: Why can't the tanks in the epic clash hit each other despite the ridiculously close range? Their barrels are set to maximum elevation.
There are several fine actors in the film, but, despite the SS General being a fanatic bastard, you kinda admire him because he is the only one acting well. All the other "actors" stink. |

Dreadful movie. One of the very few to have tanks firing at each other and hitting till recently though. (early in the battle if I remember correctly, have not seen it for decades now) |

What Korvessa said, you'd be hard pressed to find 42 things they did right in this movie. |

Yes, I found that "movie" like many in the era that it was made. Entertaining, but had little to do with actual history. Save for the fact that the battle happened in WWII and the US, etc., vs. the Germans. I won't watch it if it is on. A waste of my time to see it again. |

Yah, in days of old, if it came on the boob tube, I would watch long enough to listen to the Panzerlehr song. Nowadays I can watch and listen to just that on Youtube anytime I want. Ain't technology grand |

Got to see this movie in Germany at a local German theater. The Panzer Lied and some other scenes not too favorable were edited out of the showing. We went to see just what would be shown. |

I still remember an interview with Manteuffel.(?) "In one scene they showed me viewing the Tiger ll and how excited my actor became on learning he would have a complete unit leading the assault. In reality, I broke down and wept when I learned they wanted to use these heavy tanks to lead……….The Things would have broken down and blocked every road available." |

It is not a great movie, but the story did capture the historical "flavor" of the battle. They tried to squeeze the essence of a very large battle into one sector, attacked by "KG Hessler." Some parts of the movie that touched on the actual history: The Allies were surprised by the attack. The Germans did employ saboteurs and English speaking men behind American lines to sow confusion. Also, the 150th Panzer Brigade used American and doctored German vehicles to attempt to bluff their way through American lines….failing miserably. There was indeed a massacre at Malmedy. Allied tankers often were frustrated when facing heavy German tanks with under-armored and outgunned Sherman tanks. Hessler's battle group reminds you of Peiper's. The final tank battle is probably a bad attempt to mimic the tank battle at Celles between 2nd Armored and 2nd Panzer. In reality, 2nd Panzer was crippled by fuel shortages and in the movie, Hessler's tanks run out of gas during the battle. The end of KG Hessler is Hollywood schlock, but Peiper's men ended up isolated and out of gas and many slipped out and headed back to Germany on foot. The American defense was tenacious. Sure, Hollywood did not do the real soldiers justice, but Telly, Charles Bronson and others' characters attempt (rather badly) to pay an homage to the real heroes of the Bulge… The German attack is targeted to split the Allied armies by a drive to the Meuse and beyond. The Germans are short on supplies. The Germans rely on bad weather to neutralize Allid air superiority. I could go on….but it was a movie…..in an era without CGI. Bridge too Far and Tora, Tora, Tora are better….but hey, they tried.
Wouldn't it be great to see a modern WW2 movie full of gritty reality….like Fury….LOL |

Yeah, next they'll be complaining about the portrayal of Lütjens in Sink the Bismarck. Doug |

My wife hates that song, she rolls her eyes every time I watch it-which is every time it's on. I notice the turret of Tellys tank as well looks like it was just shaved off a bit, some there some bits missing. Also if I recall the large tank battle at the end looked like it was filmed in the desert. |

When I was 12, I thought this was the greatest movie ever made. Now I don't: Robert Ryan "A. What is the fuel consumption of a Tiger tank?" They don't show the answer he got, which was: "Yes." Still, fond memories keep me from dissing the film. |

BOTB is an excellent movie and terrible history. I have it on video and watch it every few years. In some ways it reminds me of the John Wayne Alamo. Nearly all the history is incorrect in the details but it captures a certain spirit of the event. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |
