"Development work for the new Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, scheduled to be ordered in 2019, is on track, a key US Navy admiral said Monday. "We know we need more power, we know we need more cooling," Rear Adm. John Hill, program executive officer of integrated warfare systems for the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), told an audience at the Navy League's annual Sea Air Space exposition. "But that is where [NAVSEA] is focused." The Flight III ships will be fitted with the new Air Missile Defense Radar (AMDR), under development by Raytheon. The new sensor will replace SPY-1D radars fitted in earlier versions of the ships. Both SPY-1D and AMDR are the primary sensors for the Aegis combat system, which will continue to be fitted in Flight III ships…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

The navy has de-emphasized their need for the LCS in favor of more cutting-edge AD ships like this, and I hear it's due to China's development of the DF-21D and other ASM's. So I guess we have China to thank for pushing the navy to drastically cut their LCS plans. |

Build what we can afford, build them in quantity… who is responsible for injecting logic into procurement? While I like the LCS, not being able to afford enough of them makes them useless for projecting power. I dont like the idea of adopting Hellfires as ships armaments though, way too small to sink armored enemy craft. |

The Hellfires can damage radars, turrets, systems and cause fires. Then we can board, capture and refit enemy vessels as 'razee's'…oh, wait, wrong war… |

The US Navy is building this flight of new DDG51s in lieu of more DDG1000s. Its looking like LCS is still headed to a full buy with the second flight upgraded to a multirole frigate configuration. |

Hellfires have the punch to defeat larmor, but too light of a warhead to do more than localized damage. They can take out systems but not likely sink anything but the smallest adversary. |

If all you need to do is take out the radars (or other system) to mission-kill a ship, why use a bigger, easier to intercept, more expensive missile when a Hellfire will do? Yes, I'd like a missile with better range than a Hellfire, but we're getting back into the more expensive stages. "We COULD sink the ship, but it's not worth the cost of an ESSM or SM2" |
