In the pre-dawn gloom Saturday April 25th we gather from the far north down to Bluff.. in every city, town and every rural area we gather. In tens of thousands of men, women and children we gather. why we gather? To remeber our forefathers.. our grandfathers, fathers, uncles and brothers. Our cousins friends and comrade in arms who have laid down their lives

Apparently Woolworths in Australia was spanked for daring to memorialize the remembrance via a Website. Here in America any holiday or day of rememberance is worthy of commercialization. It only diminishes the solemnity of the occasion in the minds of stuffy politically correct polititians looking for attention. Does that mean we may soon have to ask our respective governments for celebration permits?

No, what they were doing was trying to use ANZAC Day in their marketting by tying in their advertising slogan to photo's of WWI diggers- which they asked people to donate. They got smacked on various unsocial media sites because it was bloody obvious what they were trying on. Hopefully they'll also cop a big fine (unlikely) and sack the idiot who had the idea.

Yep, the management of the term Anzac for commercial purposes is done jointly between the RSL (veterans organisation) and the dept of Veteran Affairs. The remit of this management is to prevent commercial abuse of the term. Guess us Australians value our military heritage more than you guys.

The background to this specific incident is a hipster experiential marketing agency had no idea of the regulations, and neither did the marketing manager on the Woolies side.

Well said Dal & McWong.

Meanwhile …. back to the OP comments on ANZAC Day … for our friends and allies spread across various ponds …. this ANZAC Day of course is extra precious because it is the 100th Anniversary.

Lest we forget.

Well said, Gents.

I didn't know about the background to Woolies' stuff up, McW. Perhaps I'm too cynical, but after similar instances in past years (one was a Wollongong funeral director trying to cash in on the 95th, from memory) I'm more than extremely surprised that "nobody knew" the regulations.

I call bovine excrement on that. They tried it on and got smacked. It's a pity DVA don't also do something about the commemorative coins (Mac Bank involved, no surprise), "Sands of Gallipoli" sets and other crap. Too busy booking flights and hotels for pollies and senior APS veges to attend ANZAC functions OS, I suppose.

Dal the Unreasonable.
