I put together a terrain-making project using aluminum foil, scrunched into spikes, to form an armature for making stalagmites, for dungeon terrain. The armatures were then 'painted' with ABS Glue (ABS plastic suspended within a solvent). Here is a link to my blog page, the article is just a bit down the page. These were simple, very quick to make, and easy. The ABS Glue dries to a shiny, smooth finished, surface which takes paint well enough -- I used Artist's Gesso (white) to prime them, followed by a dark gray, latex wall paint, and then The Dip. The aluminum foil armature was Hot Glued to a vinyl floor tile base (two layers glued together). Cheers! |

Iiiiiinteresting. I like the authentic "drippy" look. Aluminum foil is a pretty good roughing out material in general, I think even "real" sculptors use it. |

Someone commented, on another forum, that they looked metallic, as opposed to stone -- I agree. I based my color selection off of Fat Dragon Tom's 2D Cavern Tiles, which led, indirectly, to the metallic look (the shiny finish, produced by The Dip, gives it a metallic look, complete with a little brown oxidation; I wanted the shininess, as it suggests a wet cave). I've purchased some tan-colored, latex wall paint to try to get a more stone-like appearance; I'll likely leave these as is, for variation in my caverns. Who knows, I may need some 'natural', metallic, stalagmites in a more volcanic area… >;-) Thanks, All, for the positive comments. Cheers! |
