Saw a show on the History Channel about this sort of thing. Sometimes/many times they seem so outrageous as to belong on the SyFy Channel ! huh? But … still entertaining.

The David Drake story is called 'Contact!' IIRC and is printed in several of his anthologys.

Very funny site, got quite a few laughs.
