Your kidding right? We could have had roman-Brits, high feudal (up to plate armor), ancient 9-10th century Chinese, pre gunpowder Japanese feudal, and what do we get, yet another zombie theme.

First official foray into fantasy for Saga
Jomsvikings are pretty much fantasy …

Clays Russians14 Apr 2015 1:29 p.m. PST

Conformist, your correct in that statement…… No Romano-Brits. Sigh

Mirosav14 Apr 2015 1:30 p.m. PST

So are the Skraelings.

Clays Russians14 Apr 2015 1:35 p.m. PST

I'll play against any list/board. But I will not fight "zombies, revenaunts" or whatever you call them. Nor will I fight against Skraelings. (Tho maybe in a galaxy far far away from irrefutable evidence it may have occurred. I'm going to mount my Cepetian Frank cavalry on unicorns and the retinue's horn will blow sunshine and sh@t into lethal rainbows…..

What is unhistorical about Vikings v Skraelings?
We know the Vikings landed in Newfoundland.
We know they fought against the natives.
Fighting anyone else against Skraelings isn't historical, but surely any of the 'viking' factions (Vikings, Norse-Gaels and Jomsvikings) is a historical match?
Having said all that, if you are worried about historical simulation, why are you playing Saga at all?
It's a fantastic game, but one inspired by history rather than simulating it.

I agree Dex, it's a game and a great one, but do we really need another zombie theme? And as far as skrealings go, yes, Newfounland was a thorn in the side but wood and flint and stone weapons against Scandanavian steel just isn't viable to me. It would be like a landscaping company hacking thru a field of garden gnomes. All historical games are "inspired" by history, the best games are not necessarily hiatorical simulations, sword and the flame fantastic game that has proved its worth for decades. I just don't care for fantasy tho I have played some lord of the rings game themes. Simulations? Empire V? No thanks…..can't wait to get going on Russ, Baltic crusade and steppe tribes.

Clay's Russians,

The sagas don't support the view of your steel vs flint hypothesis – the norse took the threat from skraelings seriously, which they wouldn't have done if it was just a matter of 'hacking down garden gnomes' (which is a pretty funny image).

Also, the fact that no norse settlements in NAm other than in Newfoundland have been found suggests that the threat from the locals, combined with the remoteness of the location, discouraged the norse enough to abandon their toe-old. Which is surprising, considering how they fought tooth and nail in Europe to maintain settlements in the face of local resistance (for example in Ireland).

Mind you, I haven't looked at the Saga boards and rules for the Skraelings, either, and those might be way out of line for all I know. All I'm saying is don't write off the threat of Skraelings on home ground, the norse didn't ;)

As for zombie Saga, I agree – better to have left that as a fan-developed thing. I imagine it will sell (I like the look of the figs for use in non-Saga games), but by the sound of it so would have additional historical lists.

I guess Orcs and Elves will be next.

Skraelings are a very tricksy and interesting faction.
No hearthguard, very low armour. They don't use any particular dice – their abilities require any one dice, or two dice the same, or two dice different – stuff like that.

They have the ability to copy abilities from enemy battle boards, and also to stop the enemy using abilities.
