I have just finished watching the first 5 seasons of Game of Thrones (totally love it) and now I am thinking about building 28mm armies/retinues of all the major factions. Should be fun… :-)

Did anyone already do this and if so got any pictures that you can show for inspiration? And what figures did you use?

Cheers

I think Dark Sword miniatures does a range of Game of Thrones figures – most look really nice

Yes it has been done by several folk. Perry plastics seems to be popular.

Those Dark Sword minis are very nice. With a bit of Green Stuff and creative painting I can make them look like the characters in the show. Thanks. :-)

Depends on if you want something close to the show (a bit fantastical) or closer to the book (mix of historical armor).

I haven't read the books yet so I'm going with the show for the main characters but for the rank and file I will use whatever comes close.

You have all of season 5 to watch?
I be over tonight.
On LAF there are a few threads of peeps doing conversions for GoT.

The Dark Sword minis are very nice but they are generally 32mm, not 28, and they are based on how George R.R. Martin sees the characters, not on how they appear on the show. They are also quite pricey, you certainly wouldn't want to build an army of them at those prices. Still if you want some character figures, it's probably the best way to go. OTOH if you are looking to build an Army or a Warband I would suggest going with Perry Miniatures "WOTR" and Hundred Years Wars" boxes. hey will probably work best for a Lannister/Tyrell type Army. However since there is such a variety of troop types you can't really stop there. I think that the Iron Born are probably closest to Vikings. The Starks and the rest of the North are probably closest to Scots (I'm thinking Bannockburn). Just my .02.

The cloaks from GW Warhammer Chaos Warriors are a must for men of the black watch (the movie).

Those Dark Sword GoT minis are about £7.50 GBP each. That's pricey….

The books frequently mention horse caparisons so I think War of the Roses is too late. Go for something like this:

Fireforge might be the way to go.

I always refer folks to question #2 at this link regarding armor:

So it's a major mix from the Crusades to the HYW, and deliberately so; I'd feel free to mix and match several eras to get the look you like.

My bad Grimmnar, I only watched seasons 1 to 4 and the four first episodes of season 5 on Putlocker:

Yes, those Dark Sword minis are pricey so I will indeed only get some of the main characters to lead my troops, not entire armies of them. My wife would probably kick me out if I did that. :-)

I've done armies for almost all the factions for D3H2( DBA 3.0 + HOTT). All armies were done using commercial 28mm figures (mostly modern plastics). Generally: Fireforge for the North; Perry HYW for Riverlands/Eyrie; Perry WOR for south. But mix and match a bit esp for upper level nobles with access to best armor. Metal horse barding is mentioned several times in the books.

If you want to get Martin's version of how stuff should look get the art book (is in any Barnes and Noble). He commissioned the art work to in many case specifically correct the weird HBO costumes.

Dark Sword is also pretty true to the books but the figures will NOT match with any other line. They are much too big.

Great figures. Wrong size. I suggest everyone go to Dark Sword's website and leave a message re doing a line of 28mm figures. They have tied up the rights to figures but not in a size useful for gaming (unless you want to pay $10.00 USD for every grunt in your army).

Strongly suggest ignoring HBO and stick with Martin's very historically based version of armor/armies.

If your coming to NashCon, my Song of Ice and Fire armies (and rules) will be on full display.

Excellent suggestions! Thank you very much gentlemen.

I guess I better read the books first then before I start building armies. Love the Dark Sword figs but if they are too big I won't get them. I can convert other lines easily enough.

Wish I could come to Nashcon TomT but it's a bit far to travel from the Philippines or Belgium after I have moved back there later this year. Maybe one day. :-)

Do you have the name of the art book TomT?

Thomas Thomas has it nailed down pretty much as I see it.

The Art Books are 'The Art of Ice and Fire', there are two volumes. There's also 'The World of Ice and Fire' which is mostly prose but has some excellent illustrations in it.

Thanks Will.. on my way to Amazon.com :-)

The World of Ice and Fire is a (fake) history of Westeros approved by Martin (and much of it written by Martin).

All the art in the book is also approved and very much his vision of what stuff should look like. Fortunately much of Martin's version can be done with commerical figures.

Dark Sword minis great as examples (Martin approves them too).

Contact company by commenting on webpage – ask for properly sized (28mm) figures – some day they may respond to demand.
