My first exposure to giant robot cartoons was Robotech (AKA Macross). I think that the last robot series I watched was RahXephon. The other day, a friend and I were talking about the old Revell Robotech Defenders model kits, and suddenly I got the bug to re-visit the Big Stompy Robots genre of animation; so, I would like to read your recommendations. Are there any new shows worth watching? Any forgotten classics worth looking up? Last but not least, which ones really inspire you to game? Thanks in advance.

if you have not seen it and you love Robotech, then Macross Plus!

Gundam MS 008th Team
Gundam War in the Pocket
Evangelion (if you can get past the whiney kids)
Escaflowne
I have yet to see it but Knights of Sedonia
Gasaraki
Gundam Seed
AT Votoms

Gurren Lagann will teach you the meaning of escalation, if you want something a little more hot-blooded. It's the anti-Evangelion in a lot of ways.

Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.

Excellent, well worth watching.

Macross Frontier if you can find it (never released in English though the blurays in Japan have english subtitles).

Mobile Suit Gundam 00, 1st and second seasons.
Gundam The Origin looks good too. (I'm not a fan of the Original Gundam since I did not see it till recently and the style just doesn't hold up)

If you can find it the "Robot Carnival" special from the eighties is excellent. More "artsy" stories than giant stompy robots but the battle between the mad scientist European in a metal robot vs the bamboo Japanese one is priceless.

Eureka Seven
Samurai 7
Full Metal Panic/Full Metal Panic Second Raid
Blue Gender
The Big O
Getter Robo

Blue Gender (show, not the movie, but the film does have some cool robo-shooty footage)

Full Metal Panic

Gundam 0 and 00.

Dougram.

SPT Layzner.

Metal Armor Dragonar.

Z Gundam. (At least the start – had an interesting "hard" aspect to it)

Gundam 0083 seconded.

Gasaraki seconded.

Mospeada.

Does anyone have any recommendations for online retailers of DVDs? I'd love to get some of the above, but finding them has been challenging.

Try rightstuf, I hear they have good prices. Also if you have netflix you can find Knights Sedonia there and maybe Gurren Lagann as well.

For Evangelion I'd recommend the new reimagined series starts with 1.11, then 2.22 and 3.33.

VOTOMS – especially the Pailsen Files.
