Can anyone suggest a British Dragoon Regiment which would have been stationed in the north of England, probably York, which may have been used to put down smuggling on the north east coast? |

When? The 1st (Royal) regiment of Dragoons had a depot in Yorkshire in 1810. Of course from the 1790s on you have the Yeomany who may have carried on these duties, among others… |

You may think about a regiment that didn't see action in the WSS, WAS, or the SYW. |

The Royal Dragoons were in and out of Yorkshire several times between 1712 and 1719, judging from the C19th regimental history at link – no mention of anti-smuggling work at this stage, though. |

Shame you're not going for something 1780-ish. During the AWI, a number of the newly-raised light dragoon regiments were kept stationed along the North Sea coast to deal with American privateers (as well as conventional intruders). These regiments were either raised via drafts from other regiments, or were issued non-regulation uniforms, so you could get a legitimately colourful unit (especially if you had a mixed force drawn from two or three of these regiments, which happened on occasion). Some details:- 20th and 21st LD both wore conventional LD uniform of the period, most likely with the "Emsdorff" helmet (as worn by the 17th LD in America). Officially, they had yellow and white facings respectively, but both were formed from the light companies of heavy cavalry regiments and wore their own uniforms for e brief period (1779-80)- * 20th – light troops of the Dragoon Guards regiments * 21st – light troops of the 2nd/3rd/7th Dragoons, and troops from the 15th and 16th Light Dragoons The 22nd (aka Sussex Dragoons) and 23rd Light Dragoons were raised in 1780 and 1781; both wore Tarleton helmets and green regimental coats with green collars/cuffs, but no lapels (though I suspect that stable jackets might have been normal day-to-day wear). The 22nd had green pelisses with light brown fur for all ranks. Possibly not what you wanted, but definitely something different. |

A majority of the yeomanry dragoon units were raised late in the 18th century. Yorkshire yeomanry dragoon history link |
