Hi all, We played the Battle of Shepherdstown at the Devon Wargames Group yesterday using the the Fire & Fury Regimental rule set.
The scenario is a really interesting bridgehead battle with challenges presented to both sides. If your interested in finding out more then just follow the link to the club blog. link Jonathan |

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the read. ACW is not really my area but I have to say this scenario made for a very interesting and fun afternoon, and like you, knowing nothing about this historical battle, before I played it, was quite surprised to see how our game mirrored the events described |

Nice. A few minor comments. AP Hill's division was actually much stronger than 2,000. I suspect you used the musket strength of his 3 engaged brigades on the 17th. AP Hill's division had 5,468 PFD on 22nd September (immediately after Shepherdstown) |

Cheers guys thanks for your comments. 67thtigers, you may well be right, as I said not really my subject, but if it helps, the quote comes from the scenario briefing we were using from the "Touched with Fire", "Johnny Reb", Scenario booklet. |

Yeah, almost certainly the "musket strength" of 3 of AP Hill's brigades immediately after the forced march to Antietam. 2nd September 1862 3 brigade engaged at Antietam Archer: 1,149 PFD Gregg: 984 PFD Branch: 1,754 PFD = 3,887 (AP Hill claims these three brigades did not number 2,000 *men* at Antietam. Carman makes an estimate of officers to derive approx 2,231 officers and men) Division Arty: 540
Pender: 1,596 PFD (if 57% only present as per above then 916) Field (Brockenborough): 1,336 PFD (767) Thomas: 1,205 PFD (remained at HF) Unengaged infantry = 4,137 The field return of 22nd September gives AP Hill 4,777 PFD, including arty. link |

It's one way to mess with gamers – confound their assumed knowledge. For example, set up Antietam but assume no straggling in the previous days and give the Rebs 70,000 on the field. Watch the Federal player(s) confusion about why the "weak" rebs are confounding their attacks. |
