One of my wargaming pals has a unit of Extraordinarii in his FoG Polybian Roman army. All by themselves, they've wrecked havoc with my Celts & my Carthaginians in several battles. It was with some relish that in a recent game, I caught them leaving rough ground where they became disordered & hit them with a BG of Spanish cavalry & one of Celtic warband. They were destroyed! |

The Hypaspists would have been a better choice from Alexander's army. They were able to function as light or heavy infantry, dealt with terrain obstacles and made key assaults. The Hypaspists were the crucial link between the mighty pike phalanx and the cavalry wing on the right, typically Alexander and his Companions. |
