Hi,

So, I'm planning on getting back into wargaming and I plan on doing 6mm.

Rather than just randomly look at games, I thought it'd be a good idea to ask what people recommend.

I'm looking for something that works whether I'm sticking what is essentially a couple of medieval armies against each other, or a bunch of dragons, wizards, undead and giants.

I tend to prefer relatively simple (though not overly simple) rules, but I do want different armies to play differently, whether that's undead vs. orcs, or House Stark vs. House Lannister.

To give examples of my tastes, my two favourite rulesets are HotT (which is what anything recommended here needs to beat) and Epic 40k (the one that didn't seem to be available for long, rather than 1st/2md ed Space Marine, or Armageddon)

Any suggestions appreciated.

Warmaster is designed for (roughly) this scale, and it's available as a free download.

Yep Warmaster, easy to customise and good fun.

HoTT and Fantasy Rules! are another option

There are a number of good ones, and you needn't restrict yourself to things designed for smaller minis. Warmaster (or Hail Caesar, with the fantasy mods that are available on line) is certainly one. You might also look at Kallistra's "Hordes and Heroes" (I think this one is still free), or Pendraken's new "Warband" set. Another thought would be DBA3/HotT, since you already like HotT – Thomas Thomas has done a great job of merging the two, and there are a number of discussions of it here on TMP. Personally, I'm really looking forward to Ganesha (finally) releasing their mass combat rules using a modified SoB&H engine, but I'm a big fan of that engine.

I would also go with Warmaster. It fulfills all your requirements. It is a great game, probably one of the best I've ever played. It is fun, fast and simple to play.

The 6 base armies play completely differently from each other with only 4 different stats and some minor special rules.

The special rules usually only affect some of the units in the army rather than the army as a whole, at least for the 6 main armies. There are some exceptions like undead, which play way differently from any of the other armies.

Still the rules are easy to remember and it works well for human on human clashes too.

Another vote for Warmaster, which is my game of choice. If you can find them, The Battle of Five Armies rules (GW) are the Warmaster rules updated to cover errata and changes from the original game, with armies and magic designed for Tolkien's Middle-Earth setting (and somewhat more generic high fantasy, too). Warmaster Ancients is specific to historical settings (and has some minor unique rules for pikes, skirmishers and warbands). Youd don't need it for a fantasy setting, but it's a great source for human armies that differ in composition and tactics.

My Sword & Spear rules meet your recommendations – well they will when the fantasy version is completed. You can buy the Ancient & Medieval rules and I can give you the fantasy supplement (playtest rules) as it currently stands. I can' t post links as I'm on a tablet but if you search on here you can find posts with reviews, battle reports, etc.

WarMaster is my favorite Fantasy game by far.

You might consider Peter Pig's "war in the game of magic". It is grid based sio that basing is not an issue. The contents of a square fights another. Heroes, dragons etc can strike outside of their squares. Also includes rules for specific fantasy scenery such as bottomless abyss!

I am doing 6mm fantasy with Mighty Armies, which is available as a relatively inexpensive PDF if you want to try them out. It's a straightforward set of rules, maybe not different from HOTT enough for you, but probably a slight evolution of those rules. You can find some comparisons through a search here on TMP.

Okay, that gives me a few suggestions, thanks.

I guess Warmaster needs checking out, since that got mentioned way more than anything else.
