I plan to paint up some 6mm French Garde Mobile.
Would their pants be blue or red?
Would the kepi be blue or red?
Would the uniform of the Third Republic infantry
resemble that of the 2nd Empire or the Garde Mobile?

Many thanks,
Danny Weitz

I painted mine with gray pants with red stripe, and blue kepi with red band. Some units had dark blue pants. In general the regular infantry of the Republic was clothed the same as their Imperial predecessors. One difference was that the greatcoat was worn without epaulettes. Another difference was that some units wore black gaiters over the black shoes instead of white gaiters. Osprey's two volume set on the French is pretty good as well as Outpost Miniatures three volume guide to the FPW.

Hope this helps.

Pantalon rouge was the mark of the regulars, even though some of them were just regiments du marche, the sweepings of the depots. The Republic was too desperate to issue new uniforms. They were doing well to supply ammo and food, when they could.

No red pants, must be Mobiles or worse.

Regulations and… Practice.
They were dressed locally by the departments. One day maybe some one could go in archives see what was actually purchased for them.
I can bet we'd have some surprises.
