Hi everyone,

A spot of help required from the TMP collective please.

I'm building a 15mm Minden Army which is well on the way however I'm a bit stuck for Hanoverian Cavalry. I have some Friekorps 15 but they are quite small and showing there age, the only other specific Hanoverian figs I know of are Old Glory 15s which I'm not that keen on either.

I was thinking of using another nationality figures, what do you guys think would be the closest ? Prussian, Austrian, British ?

Thanks in advance, Ken

Ken,

I have collected the regiments for Hastenbeck but used the British mounted for the German cavalry. The detail on the shabrague (rounded corners) conforms with most of the cavalry units of Hannover.

Austrian Dragoons can be used as well, however, Prussian cavalry have the box shaped blanket roll and cloak which is not used by Hannover.

I have photos of the Hastenbeck project at the blog, the 18th Century Sojourn. Click on the "Index 18th Century Sojourn" and scroll down.

Cheers,
Robert

If you don't want Freikorps nor Og, maybe wait a year or so for Blue Moon as these are quite specific and it would be a shame to do them wrong.

I used Eureka Austrians for my Brittanique Legion Hanoverians- may not be exactly right, but I am happy with the overall look.

For Hanoverian Dragoons, British Dragoon figs are a reasonable match in 18mm- coat and saddlecloth styles ok, shoulder knots, muskets stowed butt down, cartridge boxes in right place, Horse Grenadiers in mitre also available in most ranges. The key problems are lack of pigtails and more serious- dock tailed horses, which don't look right at all so need to be modified.

Hanoverian Horse are more difficult- Single cross belt, no cartridge box or shoulder knot mean British Horse or Dragoon figs don't really work even without thinking of the horses. Austrian Dragoons are ok-ish with the shoulder knots removed, but the carbines aren't stowed correctly, and they have drummers, whereas Hanoverian Horse had trumpeters.

The key problems are lack of pigtails…

Not hard to fix. Take a short length of heavy sewing thread, dip in 5 minute epoxy, and apply to the figure's back. Voila, pigtail. When the glue is dry, scrape off any excess with a #11 X-acto blade. I would just paint the mustache on the figure's face.
