When I was bored enough to watch television I may have spent some time watching these guys. Who would win in a conflict situation? George Cole (Arthur Daley) versus Richard Wilson (Victor Meldrew) Discuss. |

I have no idea who these fellows are. |

You guys have to look outside the 50 states, there's a whole world out there. Explore. When I am asked who is my favourite Avenger I say 'Emma Peel'. |
dBerczerk | 06 Apr 2015 4:06 p.m. PST |
You mean there are Avengers out there other than John Steed and Mrs. Peel? |

The problem with Victor is that everything will go wrong. At least Arthur had someone to dig him out of the hole he'd fallen into….. Cheers, JohnG PS: Yep, Emma. |

Apart from being told "look outside the 50 states, there's a whole world out there."I still have NO idea who you are going on about. I have watched a lot of British TV in my life and I married a Brit as well who also has no idea who these guys are, so apparently we missed this one. Care to help rather than simply talking down to the rest of us? |

Here you go Jerry. George Cole is an English actor most famous for his portrayal of Arthur Daley, a second hand car dealer who you wouldn't really want to buy a car from. Although he served in the Royal Air Force during the war years he did manage some deferment to continue his acting career. He was in a lot of films and is still acting at the age of 89. link Richard Wilson is a veteran Scottish actor, mostly in television and is best remembered as Victor Meldrew in the BBC series one Foot in the Grave. Although too young for war service he did National Service (the British Draft) in the medical corps. link My post was intended to be humorous but obviously failed in some sense. I could imagine Arthur Daley sending someone else in his place when war threatened perhaps armed with some dubious weaponry from another age whereas Victor Meldrew would probably serve quite faithfully although everything would go disastrously wrong in the end. I apologise if you have taken this as 'talking down', that was not my intention. I have seen an awful lot of television over the years from both sides of the Atlantic including from the black and white days. An American friend once asked me if I had seen any of the shows starring Andy Griffith. I'm sure you will know of him, I didn't but I did 'google' around and found some of his shows on Youtube. link Come on and help me breakdown this barrier between our two great nations. |

Wouldn't Arthur (George) just send for Terry? |
Winston Smith | 08 Apr 2015 5:13 a.m. PST |
I would not expect a Brit to know who Floyd the Barber or Ernest T Bass were. |
JimDuncanUK | 08 Apr 2015 6:17 a.m. PST |
Nope, that's true, I only watched a half dozen or so of the Andy Griffith show. |

Yeah, sorry. I saw the way you phrased your comment to be a little accusatory, like we hadn't tried enough or something. Regardless, after looking at the links you kindly provided I still didn't recognize these fellows. The simple fact is that no matter how much TV one has watched there will definitely be things you missed or don't remember! |

A standard answer in our house is 'google it'. Even my good lady, who is, bless her, not very tech savvy, will google things on her mobile phone to fill out the blanks in her experience, be it movie stars, Z list celebrities, holiday destinations, anything. I usually google everything, battlefields, uniforms, unit colours, holiday destinations, even places I have already been too. I like to think I am 'well informed', unfortunately, the more you know the more you don't know. |
