What would be your Top Five books covering the recent U.S. coalition war in Afghanistan?

For me, I found Ahmed Rashid's 'Descent into Chaos' to be a good breakdown of the situation in South Asia in general. Rashid's 'Taliban' was a good primer on the origins of the Taliban, but is a bit dated by now.

Graeme Smith's 'The Dogs Are Eating Them Now' resonated with me when I read it late last year (2014).

Christina Lamb has a number of good books on the region, especially 'The Sewing Circles of Herat'. Lamb is a personal friend of Hamid Karzai, so may not be as objective where he is concerned.

For an account of the initial Special Forces operation in the north of the country in 2001, that cracked the Taliban, try Doug Stanton's "Horse Soldiers".

And then, to remember that Stanton does an entirely inadequate job crediting the heroism of the Afghan fighters who really made it all happen, try Brian Glynn Williams' (not the disgraced news anchor) "The Last Warlord", about Abdul Rashid Dostum. (Covers his life from birth, through the several communist regimes, the civil war, and the 2001 campaign).

I liked Jake Tapper's The Outpost. Gives the story of COP Keating. Unfortunately that's the only one I have read thus far.

The top two IMO are:

'Outlaw Platoon' by Sean Parnell

'The Forever War' by Dexter Filkins (not to be confused with the Haldeman scifi classic)

The Restrepo book is called War by Sebastian Junger. He has done two other films as well Korengal is one I don't recall the name of the third one.
