It seems for ages that the standard 20 by 20mm infantry base has been getting a bit too small to accommodate it's cargo. Getting WFB infantry to fit on them is a real pain and sometimes not possible. Empire infantry units are too close together and don't allow for proper modeling in my view. Warhammer mentions that multi bases are okay in rules, but what about going to 25mm by 25mm? This is probably not okay for legal play but I see few problems if both sides adopt same basing. Maybe part of the reason for rumor mill re 9th edition as to round bases or bases akin to LotR basing. |

It should work fine if both use the same basing. Even if one uses 20mm and the other uses 25mm, I see no problem when playing against gentlemen. Just assume both are 25mm for contact and frontage purposes. |

How many units are you building between now and when 9th edition comes out? One or two? For these I would just suck it in and use the well-known tricks (assembling arms close in, or when akimbo stagger slightly with the next model, and either multibase or put grid numbers on each figure so the relative positioning is the same spot every time). 9th edition is rumored to allow round bases as an option. This will help some arms akimbo models, because you'll be able to rotate them a bit as you put the unit together. Or possibly not. But either way I wouldn't mess with something as essential to the game as figure spacing until we know how it will play in the upcoming edition. |

You can always use multi-basing if the math works out the same--e.g., 4 Empire State troops on a 40mmX40mm base. I know what you are complaining about, though, and multibasig may not solve the problem. I was thinking of going to 25mm bases for all humanoid-sized creatures, and 20mm bases for dwarfs, goblins, halflings, etc., that are smaller than humans. |

I'd be a little wary of upping the base sizes if you plan on continuing to play Warhammer with them; at least with the current edition large units (40+) are not unusual and having a smaller footprint can mean that units like Elves, Men etc (those on the 20mm bases) will offer less frontage to those on the larger bases and this be able to get in more attacks than they have to take – it's the difference between a 250mm frontage and a 200mm one for 10 wide units. If you can leave a crazed warrior plus his two buddies behind him out of the attack that's potentially quite significant. |
