They look odd to most as they are for gaming the earlier Gempei wars and not the later Sengoku period which has been popularized in movies.

Actually, they could work for the early decades of the Sengoku quite easily. These are actually the old Grenadier Oriental Heroes Spearmen blister set, part of their Fantasy figure line, but "close enough for government work" especially if you cut off the naginatas and replace them with yari.

A bit well-armored for ashigaru, and underdressed for samurai!

Lion,

not in the slightest are they overdressed as Ashigaru, or if they're samurai not the least bit underequipped:

How well equipped an ashigaru was depended upon the wealth of his daimyo. How well a samurai was equipped depended upon his personal wealth as much as anything else. Wind up a ronin, and it was usually a case of turn to banditry, find a new daimyo to take you on, or starve.

Ronin would frequently sell of their armor in pieces or depending upon how desperate they were, the whole lot to make some desperately needed cash if they could (assuming the event that rendered them a ronin didn't involve a hasty removal of the armor to speed their escape).

Bandits, ashigaru, and ronin alike were not above scavenging pieces of protective gear from fallen samurai to try and improve their personal protection and chances of survival.

So no, these fellows are actually not all that far off of typical ashigaru from the 15th to the early 16th century depending upon which daimyo or samurai they were serving.

Oh Ive been Tangoed !!
:)
Thanks Tango01

Thanks guys (especially Leland) I was wondering about what line and period they came, as old Grenadier photos are hard to come by, so I had only name of the producer and year on the back of the bases.

I plan them to be strangely/mixed equipped bandits in Sengoku
but as they are my only samurai styled miniatures so far time will show :>

My pleasure my friend! (smile)
