I am looking at my Arfika Korps and 8th army figures, and I don't like the basing. I need help on how to get a good looking desert base. I have used the Tamiya Scenics Effects desert sand as my basing for some troops. But the sand looks too yellow. I have gone to the local beach and grabbed some sand, and used that for basing. But it ends up looking a pale grey. And in fact, when I look at the beach carefully, it is actually a greyish color -- it is the sun on the sand that gives it a 'sand' color. I am thinking about repainting the scenic effect bases with Vallejo Iraqui Sand -- but that will give a monotone appearance. Before I do that, does anyone have any suggestions for basing fogs for desert warfare! |

Use Durham's water putty. Put it on about 6 bases or so at a time and then when they are starting to dry go back and smudge them up a bit to get a rough look. You can then sprinkle sand on them or not. Paint the bases with Howard Hues Geo-Hex 4144 Tan and then highlight with GW bleached bone or whatever they are calling it these days. |

I use thinned white glue and a blend of Woodland Scenics earth blend, brown ballast, river bottom sand from a mulch supplier and kitty litter. The latter is unused, of course. I seal the whole with dullcoat. |

Your local home center will sell play sand. $5 USD for a lifetime supply. I use wood glue then sand on my bases. Wash & dry brush. Easy. I used to use water putty but the glue and sand is easier and more consistent. |

I've used some of the vallejo pumice paste and fine sand and it looks ok. What scale are you doing as this may make a difference. I'd go for about three successive colours on the base going up to an iraqi sand with maybe a (bleached bone) super light dry brush so it gives the base depth. Good luck. |

I use this style for my Moors and Byzantines, except I use light brown tufts instead of any green. link link I got my "Builders Sand" (could not find it in a store) by scooping up the sand and small gravel around a storm drain at our Library parking lot. |

I second Durham's water putty (or some other fine-grit filler) for your base. What will look best color-wise is a shade-mid-highlight 3-step painting process. I follow the suggestions from this article on the FoW website: link I like the Mauritania and Tunisia base ideas, personally. Mauritania uses a 50/50 mix of 824 German Camo Orange Ochre and 874 US Tan Earth as the base, mid-tone of 914 Green Ochre (which isn't very green, don't worry), 976 Buff for the top highlight. Add some tufts of grass to finish it off. Tunisia? 826 German Camo Medium Brown base, drybrush of 977 Desert Yellow, final drybrush of 819 Iraqi Sand. Shrubbery (not grass tufts) to finish. |
