I used the normal guide for US troops but used a lighter khaki for their battle dress. That seems to work well enough. |

Army and Marine units at the very beginning of the war did not have a specific field uniform. They wore were deployed in Service Dress. Troops assigned to the Phillippines would have worn Summer/ Tropical uniform. The Army winter Service Dress was M1917A1 Helmet, M1939 OD 4 pocket Service coat, OD shirt with black tie, M1937 light shade OD trousers, M1938 canvas leggings and polished brown service shoes. Army summer/tropical uniform was M1917A1 Helmet, khaki cotton shirt and trousers (shade 1) Khaki tie, M1938 canvas leggings and polished brown service shoes. Cavalry units would have riding breeches and brown riding boots. The World War II GI by Windrow& Hawkins (The Crowood Press, UK 1993) has colored photos of these uniforms. Marines Winter Service A uniform was Winter Service coat, wool trousers both in Forest Green, tan cotton or flannel shirt, khaki field scarf (i.e. tie) brown cordovan belt and brown polished field shoes. Summer Service Dress was khaki cotton shirt and trousers, canvas leggings and brown polished service shoes. They would have been issued either the M1917 or M1917A1 helmet. USMC Uniforms and Equipment 1941-45, Alberti & Pradier (Histoire & Collections, 2007) has colored photos and Uniform Regulations, United States Marine Corps, 1937 (reprint Patterson Printing, Benton Harbor MI 1999) has detailed descriptions. |

I have some good interwar Marine 28mm figures to paint with the old helmut (1917) or the Campaign hat, with leggings. I thought painting with a good khaki, with Khaki OD webbing, and leggings, and darker color for the campaign hats. I have seen some pics for this time period with Corpsman in navy blue dungaree jeans with chambray light blue shirt and white leggings. Any thought on that for one painted with a Platoon of Marines in the Philippines or Wake 1941-42?
