Making excuses to buy Brigade Models awesome 15mm sci-fi models… So here are my Cold War Belgians in retro space! With a bit of Tintin imagi-nation (my current chronic obsession) thrown in the mix… link |

Of course (referring to your blog) Slammers is "retro": it's the war in Vietnam but in spaaaace! Oh, BTW, an often over looked titbit is that the Slammers themselves are, of course, Dutch (homeworld Niew Friesland). That's next door to Belgium… John T |

I totally get were Slammers technological philosophy and aestetic are coming from… And don't mind: just saying I'm not too fan of the "shiny cloth iron" look of some drawings/figures. Not critisizing the author/illustrator/sculptor or people that likes them. Just saying I'm not a fan and it kept me away from that sub-genre so far. Now Brigade models recent release are rapidly changing my mind about the setting. Albeit in a slightly "reimaged" version. |

Brigade's stuff is very nice. I like using their's – along with many other manufacturers – in the 'Slammerverse' as I find that, to my eye at least, it all 'gels'. Different tech for different worlds (wheels and tracks on upwards) which reflects the novels very well. When we first started doing this (granted over a decade ago and mostly in 28mm) suitable vehicle options were really very limited. Nowadays – especially in the, frankly, so very popular 1/100th – the choices are so vast it would be impolite to not try and use as broad a selection of vehicle types as possible! I'd also mention excellent stuff from Armies Army, Darkest Star, GZG and – of course – the official stuff from Ainsty (inluding the half tracks) plus many others (CMG etc). There are just so many suitable choices which are easily available. I didn't understand the 'shiny cloth iron' bit, though…? John T |

"Shiny cloth iron": to me this kind of vehicles…
Conjurs pictures of vintage appliances…
No offence ment to the designer, sculpter or painter. I am just not a fan of the design. |

Brithis Hermes light tanks (not available in 15mm, yet?) as not-Scorpion/Scimitar and modded with the Artemis APC turret or some missile turret for not-Spartans and not-Strikers respectively… How about useing the new Baldur Light Tank hull with the Artemis MICV turret that combination of vehicle parts would create something very close to a hover Scorpion/Scimitar look alike. Also I remember that Tony started doing a Belgium mercenary force several months ago, I've got no idea how far his gotten with it or even if it is an abandoned project now but he was off to a good start see the pic below.
(The colour scheme echoes that of the Belgian army in 1940. I gave it an overall coat of Citadel Bestial Brown, drybrushed in a lighter shade) |

Ahhhhh "Cloth Iron" – Trojan Points: now I understand what you mean! No not to every one's tastes, I accept, but loyal to the book descriptions (from almost 40 years ago…). Other folks do alternative styles of similar vehicles, of course:
This does much the same job with a different style from Brigade. John T |

Nice job on the Belgian Shaman tank! I didn't though of that pre-WW2 paint scheme but it's quite fetching and different from aal that olive drab out there. Not throwing stones at anyone here: the "iron clothes" are indeed very loyal to the (40 year old) source. Just chalk my lack of enthousiasm on the X (or is Y already?) generation not respecting anything, or something ;-) Brigade mercenary range does indeed a great job of reimaging HS with a more contemporary look! The Magnus APC totally what comes to (my) mind when hearing/reading the words "hover M113"…
I wonder if the "roof" and MG emplacements of the above Mantra John showed would fit on top of the Magnus? |
John Treadaway | 05 Apr 2015 5:34 a.m. PST |
I think you might suffer with 'leg room' for the gunners: the Mantra s already fairly shallow compared to the Slammers combat car (so sitting/kneeling gunners rather then standing). I think with the Magnus they might have to be laying prone. Mind you, it wouldn't stop them being remote mounts, I guess. John T |

I wonder if the "roof" and MG emplacements of the above Mantra John showed would fit on top of the Magnus? I'm not to sure on that but a quick email to Tony would get that question answered for you, also there are plans to produce a couple more variants of the Magnus a twin door top roof hatch is one of them which could turn it into a howitzer or mortar carrier. |
