Well done, Gunfreak. An observation regarding the sashimono. The Yamagata sashimono should have a white 'kikyo' Balloonflower mon on them. All Japanese reenactors participating in different Festivals portraying the Yamagata contingent have the white mon. Trying to track down the source of plain black Yamagata sashimono, I think it is a misunderstanding on page 62 of Stephen Turnbull's 'Samurai Warlords'. I count myself as one of those who misunderstood many years ago: "Incidentally, Yamagata Masakage was killed at Nagashino in 1575, and his troops wore a black sashimono." Dr. Turnbull was comparing Masakage's sashimono to that of his brother Obu Toramasa's red sashimono. Turnbull did not mean all black or plain black. On page 67 of Turnbull's 'Samurai Warriors' Yamagata troops are illustrated with black sashimono with white mon. |
