Hi all, Although I'm mostly a miniature gamer I'm currently casting around for a turn-based PC game set in the ACW. I still occasionally play Age of Rifles, and I'm wondering if there's a more modern variation on that sort of game? I've looked online a few times but can't find anything other than RT games, which my old and addled brain can't cope with. Thanks in advance, Jay. |

These games look dated but are very good. hpssims.com/default.asp . VonTed has already got matrix up for you and those guys do some superb games. |

Have you already tried the "Battle Ground" series? |

Sadly John Tiller Software (they did the HPS sims titles) and Matrix seem to be the last "major" producers of PC "Hex and Counter" games |

Took a look, no Turn Based tactical games. They do have turn based strategic types and they make the excellent real time "Scourge of War" series. Neither are what Jay was looking for (but I suggest trying the Scourge of War demo – it may work for him) |

This is RTS, but not sure if it "truly" a RTS game. (no base building, etc….) ultimategeneral.com |

John Tiller Software does have an ACW game – turn based. he has several different scenario packages for it. The basic game is almost free. The scenarios cost a little more. There were scenarios from all the theaters, East, West, Missouri / Arkansas. My kindle just died, but I have several of the scenarios. The base game has learning games on it. Wish I could remember all the titles. |

The Battleground series are about the best I have seen. |

Take a look at the Take Command series. While its not turn based its the best ACW game I've played |

Thanks for all the replies so far! Take Command rang a bell…and I dug out a copy (the 2nd Manassas version) that I've had for a while but never tried. I think I'll give it a go. ACW games seem to fall into three main categories – i) Turn based, but old/dated ii) Turn based, but strategic rather than battlefield/tactical iii) RT, in various flavours I'm leaning to the view that I may have to have another go at acclimatising myself to RT games…! Chz, Jay |

The HPS/John Tiller titles may be a little old, but there have been upgrades made to the graphics and there are groups out there that regularly support email play, like wargamingsociety.com On the low end of complexity, Hunting Cow has produced some Ipad turn based, Civil War themed games. |
