A while back, one of our members used the term "anime gaming" to refer to his anime-inspired miniatures gaming.

I'm not sure "anime gaming" is the perfect term – would it different from "manga gaming"??? – but I get what he means. He collects and paints figures which match the look of Ghost in the Shell.

So… are you an anime miniatures gamer?
Or do you know any?
Or do you want to be?
Or maybe you don't see how it is different from regular sci-fi or fantasy gaming?

Cyrus the Great02 Apr 2015 8:26 p.m. PST

I play Super Dungeon Explore and have collected a bunch of the chibis from Impact Miniatures.

Pictors Studio02 Apr 2015 8:29 p.m. PST

Yes, I play Infinity which is heavily influenced in design by anime. I know quite a few others that play.

I'm not sure that it is structurally any different from other sci-fi gaming in that anime, that depicts sci-fi is really just sci-fi in a distinct cartoon format as opposed to a novel or live-action movie format say.

So there isn't any reason why it would be different.

Rogzombie Fezian02 Apr 2015 8:37 p.m. PST

If it was based on a show like Evangelion, Noir or any good anime it would be cool but I would rather not use big eyed minis. So I dont know if that makes sense. I guess I would have to see something that I liked. Bebop universe would be cool.

I have not yet gamed any anime-inspired scenarios or campaigns, but often when watching one of the Sci Fi or fantasy anime series I will think about how to add many elements to make an interesting game.

Ghost in the Shell in particular has many attributes that would make for challenging games: rival police and military factions, terrorists, cyber-warfare, AI robot tanks, cyborgs, etc.

Captain Gideon02 Apr 2015 9:26 p.m. PST

Yes I'm an Anime gamer to be more exact an Anime Space Gamer.

I play Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato which is a Classic show in Japan and my friends and I partake in Battles based on that Classic 70's Anime show.

I have over 500 ship miniatures for the various Fleets in StarBlazers and the bulk of them are painted.

StarBlazers might not be everyone's cup of Sake:) but it's been good to me.

Plus I'm a HUGE Space Cruiser Yamato/StarBlazers fan and have been since the early 70's.

So has anyone here has partaken in the StarBlazers game system?

dsfrank02 Apr 2015 10:31 p.m. PST

no – as in no

someone could combine anime and napoleonics and they'd have a perfect storm of something I couldn't possibly be less interested in

Weasel02 Apr 2015 11:14 p.m. PST

Infinity seems that way a bit.
Heavy Gear has strong anime influences.

I'd be all over it but I can't think of any rules or very many miniatures that fit, other than mecha stuff.

tnjrp02 Apr 2015 11:45 p.m. PST

Can't say I'm into it as such. I try to steer clear of the cartoonish and wacky stuff that apparently is close to mandatory in most scifi anime for example. Discounting that aspect of the "genre" I do have a decent amount of anime-based or anime-inspired stuff for miniature gaming all the same. Most of that last consisting of Infinity minis with some Anima Tactics stuff thrown in.

Nerp.

haywire03 Apr 2015 5:52 a.m. PST

Robotech, Heavy Gear, and Super Dungeon Explorer… so I guess the answer is yes.

No.

ordinarybass03 Apr 2015 6:37 a.m. PST

Maybe?
My Mech Attack gaming is mostly Battletech inspired, but we do use alot of Anime mecha models (gundam, Gasraki, Macross, Robotech) when we run it in 28mm. After all, BT probably wouldn't exist without Anime mech designs.

I don't play them, but definitely agree that Heavy Gear and Infinity are essentially "Anime" games.

Aside from some design elements that seem to be shared by alot of anime, I don't see it as being much different from other sci-fi gaming.

Yes Anime is a perfectly good ovearching term, c.f. all the Anime conventions.

And yes to the gaming!
* Battletech
* Super Dungeon Explore
* Relic Knights (ok, i'm just going to play with the minis, not those rules!)
* Ninja All Stars (on Kickstarter now, just played a test game with the beta rules on Wednesday ^,^)
* homegrown dungeon-crawls with buckets o' chibi minis for play.

* Speed Rally (Speed Racer), own the rules and lots of cars, but haven't played yet.

Also, the first person to make some Ghost in the Shell mini's gets my money.

Feet up now03 Apr 2015 8:35 a.m. PST

Me and dear daughter ( anime/manga fan) have played Anima tactics cipher-studios.com which has been sadly discontinued. She likes some of the infinity figures too and the nearly anime super dungeon explore mad fun boardgame.
We have watched Malifaux being played , looks very anime steampunkish too.
I have become an anime fan In order to play fun miniature games with the kids , they are actually just as much fun as other skirmish games.

tkdguy03 Apr 2015 9:25 a.m. PST

I played in a few sessions of Big Eyes, Small Mouth, which is an anime-based rpg. You don't have to use an anime setting with the rules, though.

Nice, rules-light system. Pity my martial arts/film noir campaign never made it past the first session.

Weasel03 Apr 2015 9:39 a.m. PST

BESM is a really cool system. Ended up giving my book away since we didn't get to play much but I always liked the idea that the cost of a skill depends on the setting.

Lion in the Stars03 Apr 2015 11:58 a.m. PST

Infinity: I have an entire set of Ghost in the Shell inspired conversions, and now that I have snagged a Jigabachi helo I have 3 little Tachikomas to use as REMs.

I also have designs on another force based on Jormungand, and another based on Psycho-Pass. And of course there's the Knight Sabers from Bubblegum Crisis/Crash.

I backed the Robotech RPG Tactics KS to the tune of far too much money.

I have a whole pile of Heavy Gear minis.

Yeah, I'd say I am an anime gamer. :P

Gear Pilot03 Apr 2015 4:39 p.m. PST

Yes. Heavy Gear, Infinity, Battletech as others have mentioned.

Chuckaroobob03 Apr 2015 8:53 p.m. PST

I really like Heavy Gear, Soda Pop, and Infinity figs. At some point trying to get a Giant Stompy Robot set up with terrain. Trying to find opponents is another thing altogether.

zircher04 Apr 2015 2:27 a.m. PST

I prefer Mekton Zeta to Battletech. but that's kind of a dead end gaming-wise. Generally any RPG inspired mecha gaming drifts into anime territory with ease, for example, CthulhuTech. But, I don't go out of my way to collect anything at this time.

Twig6604 Apr 2015 2:39 p.m. PST

I play 15mm Girls Und Panzer matches and use The Toy Battle System rules for skirmish games with 5 inch anime figures; mainly Giant Monster Rampage for Magical Girl battles and Atomic Super Humans for paranormal type battles.

Sargonarhes06 Apr 2015 6:11 p.m. PST

Heavy Gear IS my anime gameing. AT Votoms like battles. Just need to make some Red Shoulders.

And some Jovain Chronicles or Mekton Zeta for my Gundam fix.

royalpain8817 Apr 2015 10:12 p.m. PST

Can't forget about Star Blazers Fleet Battle System.

Ghost in the Shell is good source material for role-playing games as well as wargames.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP20 Apr 2015 10:44 a.m. PST

No as in 'eff no. :)

Thomas Nissvik23 Apr 2015 5:50 a.m. PST

I am slowly building tanks and terrain to run Girls Und Panzer in 20mm. Most of the anime I like best, such as Higurashi, Death Note, Ouran Host Club and others don't really work for table top gaming.

DS615123 Apr 2015 7:19 a.m. PST

No. Can't stand the style at all.
