… contribution to historic conflict.

"It was one of the bloodiest battles in military history – and soldiers from the north-east were in the thick of the fighting.

Now Aberdeen's Gordon Highlanders Museum has launched two special exhibitions to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

The special displays seek to shed light on the regiment's earliest roots and the path to the killing field where more than 25,000 men lost their lives…"

It may have been one of the most influential battles but it's not exactly one of the bloodiest battles in military history. It would be fairly well down that list.

Not so sure well down that list. In sheers numbers OK, but for the experience of battle, a particularly unpleasant affair. Up there with Borodino

Highly concentrated on a tiny battlefield. A single day, indeed almost a single afternoon, of intensive fighting without any respite. Very high casualty rates for the relatively small numbers involved and, in some units almost a massacre (accepting that many maybe disappeared to "help wounded to the rear")!

If you had to chose the top three say for "bloodiest" what would they be? Isandlwhana, Agincourt and Helm's Deep I'd chose

Oh yes……of course. Thoroughly unpleasant experience for all .

Or Verdun or Paschendaele then…but I would argue all were fought over a long period. Months…..

"Waterloo" (nowhere near the village) was all fought in a few hours. In terms of KIA or Wounded IA per hour……….

You are right my friend.
