I just wanted to share this 'find' although it's probably of more use to UK gamers.

Getting hold of a decent hex mat to start air wargaming has been a bit problematic due to shipping costs, waiting times, high cost etc.

I was initially looking for a sea mat. Rather than get a blue cloth I decided to try my luck by looking at blue vinyl flooring at a Carpetrite (a national chain for non-UK members). What I did find was a mottled blue hex pattern called Cortille 574. The hexes are 30mm across the flat. A section measuring 2m x 2m cost me £29.97 GBP. The vinyl itself is fairly thin at around 1.5mm so its easy to roll up and light.

The Carpetrite website doesn't feature this, but I did find a picture at best4flooring.co.uk (link below).

The actual colour of the mat is a bit brighter than shown in
the above link.

There is also a plain matt black 'mat' with a silver hex overlay. If I knew of any decent nightfighter rules I may have been tempted to get that as well. It may be of interest to the Space gamers here.

I dislike hexes in games anyway but if I was going to use them I would put the miniatures on hex bases equal in size to '1 hex' and use a spare base to move them about. Ranges are best measure with a ruler anyway as the hexes distort the results. Arcs and templates for radar etc are again best done using templates that have the correct angle rather than being stuck with multiples of 30 degrees.

That said – if you do like hexes these vinyl mats are a good way to go.
