Are there any alternatives to Neil Thomas' "Simplicity in Practice" rules which were published in Battlegames 23: see link and link I'm looking for rules which are intended to be close in size and complexity covering the same horse-and-musket period (my latest battle with the SiP rules is detailed here: link |

Neil Thomas has some great ideas, but of course the details and choices he makes, since as a minimalist they are so few, are bound to be bones of contention. I have been playing some One hour Wargames scenarios from his latest book. (which I recommend). I bristle at the notion that Horse and Musket infantry cannot charge. His rules REALLY are amenable to tweaking parameters though without throwing the balance off (within reason of course!) If you basically like the rules, I would tweak them. My alternative that I like and have also tweaked, is Twilight of the Sun King. It is very simple and directed at Marlburian WSS. |

I presume you will have seen members' variants of the SIP rules posted in the files section of the AMW yahoo group? Well worth a look if you haven't. Otherwise, why not tweak the rules to suit yourself? Their simplicity makes it easy to do, and easy to playtest your alterations to check their effects upon the game. |

You are both right of course, the rules are very easy to tweak, but I was just wondering if anyone else had given writing rules similar in scope a go, before I head down the "tinkering" route. |
