There was a post on facebook by his son in law that Pat was hit by a car while bicycling and airlifted to the hospital in a coma – it is apparently too early to tell anything else. Pat could be a little crochety at times but is a true dean of wargaming and student of the history behind it. Give him and his family a thought or prayer.

That's horrible news. I too will pray for Pat.

First met Pat in '85. I had just moved out here from Kentucky and was pointed in his direction, for wargaming, in the Alexandria area. He is truly a classy gentleman. I have benefited from all his hard work and enjoy both his figures and writings.
My prayers are with him and his family for a speed recovery.

Ragbones31 Mar 2015 5:58 p.m. PST

Although Pat could be irascible I think sometimes it was done to poke fun at his own reputation. He was always kind and very generous with his knowledge and experience. A gentleman with a quick wit and a sharp sense of humor. He's in my thoughts and prayers. Jon, could you provide updates for those of who do not use Facebook?

I will say a prayer for him. I ordered some SCW last year from him. He kindly helped sort out some organizational info for me. He had comprehensive info about the SCW amongst others. Then he shipped out my order before I had paid for it. Truly a gentleman and displaying what's best about the hobby.

All my best to his family.

Never met the man but bought some of his Editions Brokaw figures many a year ago. Some of my first figures. Hope for the best for the man.

He is one of the real starters of the hobby. His Arm Chair General magazine and other projects in the late 1960's to 70s helped get the hobby going.

In recent years he tried to keep the organized aspect of the hobby honest. I have known him since 1968 when I saw him do a demo of Franco Prussian war game with flats. A great guy.

He is in my thoughts and prayers.

I played in one of his games at Historicon. He was very sharp and put on a great WSS game. Best wishes for a complete recovery.

One of the giants of our hobby. Hope he'll be ok .

Mad Guru01 Apr 2015 12:07 a.m. PST

Man, that's awful news. Met Pat way back in 1983 at NYCon and he left a lasting, and very positive, impression. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family and friends.

OSchmidt01 Apr 2015 3:15 a.m. PST

Oh dear, this is terrible.

I've known Pat since the first time I went to a convention at the Ben Franklin Hotel in 1963. Great Guy, Great Gamers, done a wonderful amount of work for the hobby and HMGS. Shabbilly mistreated by most gamers who did not know him personally.

I don't know what to say. Have gamed with Pat many times over the years. He is the reason I game and paint SCW and WSS.
He is in my prayers.

mad monkey 101 Apr 2015 6:18 a.m. PST

Main reason I like the WSS. My prayers be with you Pat.

I am floored by the news. Prayers going out to his family. I met him and played in his game at Historicon 20 years ago. Got me interested in the SCW.

Who asked this joker01 Apr 2015 7:07 a.m. PST

I met him a couple of times at various wargame shows. Great to talk shop with. His pamphlets on the WSS are really great. He is a credit to the hobby, especially in the Horse and Musket era. Prayers to him and his family.

I had a long conversation with him and his Grandson at Cold Wars.

I can only hope that he gets better and back to the things he loves to do.

A gentleman, generous with his time and knowledge and a good promoter of the hobby. I worked with him for several years to carry and sell his WSS and SCW figures and booklets at a number of conventions and he was always polite, communicative and a resource.

One of the last true 'fathers' of the hobby in the US, I can only hope that he recovers.

I always found Pat to be a gracious gentleman, free with his time and always willing to talk gaming. Yes, as others have said, he could delight in his 'poison pen' persona but, as also has been said, I think 90% percent of that was just his schtick and he did it with tounge firmly planted in cheek.

OSchmidt01 Apr 2015 11:00 a.m. PST

Does anyone know the hospital that we can send cards and flowers?

Ed von HesseFedora01 Apr 2015 11:04 a.m. PST

There's a news item that appears to be about Pat. Says Bayonet Point Medical Center, link

OSchmidt01 Apr 2015 11:27 a.m. PST

Thanks for that link Ed

I called there.

Obviously I can't get more detailed information from them as I am not a family member and don't have the code. But he is in critical condition. That means he is still with us. Let us hope and pray.

When I first discovered "proper" wargaming circa 1987, it was via a chance encounter with Roundway Marlburians and Pat's booklets on the WSS. These struck several chords with me, not the least of which was the idea that here was a hobby where enthusiasts not satisfied with available materials would seek out information and publish it themselves. He was also an enthusiast for gaming the SCW when that was very much past the fringe.

For those who don't have an experience of the hobby pre-Internet, I can't overemphasize how people like Pat Condray generously and enthusiastically expanded our knowledge and our horizons.

Dave Crowell01 Apr 2015 3:58 p.m. PST

Unfortunately, the news is that Pat has passed away.

jefritrout02 Apr 2015 8:21 a.m. PST

I had heard 4th hand that he passed away. As a result I was not going to be the first person to pass on this news, but it seems to be so.

I only spent about half an hour talking to him at Cold Wars (mostly listening), but figured I would have more time when he came back up to Maryland. He was the last of the original HMGS triumvirate. First Wally Simon, then Bob Coggins and now Pat Condray. I knew them all quite well and this is sad news indeed.

tankette02 Apr 2015 5:41 p.m. PST

Pat's son-in-law reported the news.
