I think he is a Turkic guard soldier carrying a mace which would have been used by ceremonial palace troops. |

I don't know about Turkic but I think the mace was often carried by ceremonial guards during the Abbasid period. |

Turkic because of the mace and because of the flapover coat and the lack of beard. None of those is conclusive, but it is suggestive. |

Is it actually a mace? I can't think of any examples of maceheads that extend into a long central spike like that. |

link Another, they are both later, but it shows that it is quite possible to have a mace with a central spike.Might be rather useful for a guard to have a weapon that is both percussive and penetrative and relatively short and handy. |
