looking through a old mag I had, said British carrier hms illustrious had been damaged in action in January 1941 (wiki says german dive bombers)she ended up in Norfolk Virginia for major repairs so what was the german reaction as to what they would see as breach of us neutrality (internment)which didn't happen |

I suspect they weren't happy, but not much they could, or wanted to do at the time. Clearly, declaring war against the US in December was a major mistake. |

US neutrality was eroding fairly substantially by then anyway – training schools for British pilots were opened in the US at about the same time as the Illustrious arrived in Norfolk. Really the Germans had little scope to protest, as a public slanging match over it would be as likely to hasten more open US support for the British effort as to prompt second thoughts. |

Not to mention that the US Navy was escorting British convoys halfway across the Atlantic. There wasn't much neutrality left by that point. |

We were also reporting the location of u-boats to the RN. Even though we weren't attacking them, that's not exactly neutral. |
