Hi All, Hi All, Here's some shots of a box of our 'Hannibal's African Veterans' glued together and painted. The brush work is by our good friend Gary of March Attack. Gary has painted them wearing a mix of supplied Gallic clothing, and looted Roman tunics (both military and civilian) to give the whole unit a really mixed, 'on campaign' feel. They should give you a flavour of what you can do with this highly versatile set! Cheers Greg

Greg – very timely as my boxes were delivered the other day. Fascinating paint job – figures are a great mix. Agree with comments on the shields – especially that dramatic red horse – though I would have left bosses in metal. Have some hesitation about velite shields. Basing is really very unusual and works well. Garry |

Hi Mithridates, Glad they got to you OK. The logic on the shields was that the Numidian and lighter African troops may have gladly taken the Velites' parma, as much as the heavies would have nabbed their share of Scuta. We painted the shield bosses as we wanted to give the impression that these were Roman shields repainted (and that their new owners wouldn't have been that careful!!) but agree, aesthetically metal bosses would look good. The bases are made by Sarissa and designed to allow troops to be dynamic in posing without sticking each other in the back with their weapons. I'm personally not a huge fan of ranks of statically posed figures, and I think these allow for more dynamism. They also butt together nicely when you move units into combat (again, without bending weapons) which looks really cool to me – troops looking like they are mixing it up :-) Greg |

Thanks Greg. Arrived in very good time, next on the painting list. Planning 24 man veterans units – using your 'heavies, command and spare metal figures to make up numbers. Certainly the unit shown will act as a guide. Not sure what I will use the velites for – some at least will be an African 'citizen' levy and will use a mix of metal scuta and thureos shields. Others may morph into Etruscan skirmishers. Have some similar bases for skirmishers – they should work very well. What's next on the agenda btw – I do hope you follow through with some command types, especially Hannibal!! Garry |

Hi Garry, Liby-Pheoenicians next, then Carthaginian Citizen Infantry and Italian Allies for the Romans. Hannibal will be in there somewhere! :-) Greg |
