what "scale" is this in?????? 6 mm 15 mm 25 mm? |
Saber6 | 28 Mar 2015 8:28 p.m. PST |
Looks like @ 1" = 100m That is just a guess based on the features on the map |
Tankrider | 28 Mar 2015 9:03 p.m. PST |
Smaller or not, a company logo printed on the playing surface sucks. |
Lucius | 28 Mar 2015 9:17 p.m. PST |
I'm a fan of these mats , but I agree – the logo thing is completely unnecessary. I spend a lot of time making a battlefield diorama for my games, and I don't allow soda cans or dice on the table. Much less a 21st Century billboard. |

Volley & Bayonet, Napoleon's Battles and Grand Armee use a 1:3600 (1 inch = 100 yards) terrain scale At 1 " to 100 yards it is 1:3600 to 100 meters it is 1:4000 I suspect this is for Blucher.. Well done. Well its good to be right once from time to time: "On the Waterloo terrain mat being made by Cigar Box Battle, which is scaled specifically for Blücher, the Prussian arrival area is about one foot from the outskirts of Plancenoit. |

also no to the logo, i would want a battle mat, not a bill board… (ok sarcastic exaggeration) but you get the idea |
Jcfrog | 29 Mar 2015 2:37 a.m. PST |
Very disappointed. 1 why only 120 deep? No space or hardly enough to put Wellington's boys, esp on his left. 2. No option for a left hook for N. Braine l'Alleud is gone. 3 ugly grey zones nearly any one can do in trying home brew mats instead of nice buildings; like they did on Acw mats. Not all elevations are at the same height and it makes quite a difference tactically. What about just a second level for ex? Looks badly thought out and rushed. Obviouly they like better Acw You can do way better chaps. |

Sunken road, hedges any one? Booo. |

I'll add a "me too" to the logo issue. If a company wants to advertise on my gaming table, I'm happy to discuss rates. But there's no way I'm going to pay someone else for their advertising. |

While not a fan of the logo either, placing terrain, such as a lichen forest/scrub or other piece over the corner would effectively obscure the logo. The mat is oversized, so can be arranged to allow the logo to drape over the side and not be as visible. Hopefully the artwork will be modified so that the logo is faint and not so glaring, removing the need to hide it. |
daler240D | 29 Mar 2015 5:55 a.m. PST |
Wow, tough crowd! I think it is a beautiful map and more than useful for the scale of Blucher with regard to terrain definition. The logo?!?! Give me a break, it's dangling off the edge of the table. Just about EVERYTHING that you buy in the world that is manufactured by someone has it's name on it; from cell phones to board games. |
John de Terre Neuve | 29 Mar 2015 6:13 a.m. PST |
I agree with you daler240D. I have 3 mats from them, the logo dangles over the edge of the table and as far as I can tell no-one has remarked on it. John |
monger | 29 Mar 2015 7:14 a.m. PST |
I have several Cigar Box mats. I have never had an issue with the logo. It either dangles off table or is easy to obscure with terrain pieces. It's not like it's pressed into the center of the mat. |

North Star are taking orders from British customers for the Waterloo Mat now, delivery mid-April. link Nick |

And in the video, he even mentions that the logo is now smaller. I have no issue with the logo. I really like all of their products. |

I'll be honest. knowing nothing about battlemats (or wargaming, if it comes to that) I watched through the video and thought this was a great idea, but kept wondering when would I see this logo. I expected to see something immediately in front of LHS, dead centre, to judge by the strength of feeling expressed. Instead, as folk have said above, it is right in one corner, small and easily covered, if you so choose. It is hardly intrusive……..the guy has to make a living. This is not the big McD after all……… |
Trajanus | 29 Mar 2015 12:43 p.m. PST |
Same issue for me as their Gettysburg and Nashville mats, how many times do you want to play the same battle? |
Weland | 29 Mar 2015 2:43 p.m. PST |
I like the concept and have ordered a Europe mat. I am not too keen on their ocean mat. The logo does seem annoying, but I can cover up or airbrush away. My one comment on the Waterloo map and maybe it is the quality of the video, is that it looks too brown. I have been there four times over the years and lived in Belgium for four years as a kid and I never recall it being brown. |

Superb news! Thanks for posting. I hope they release more maps of famous Napoleonic battle sites to compliment Blücher. In the meantime, how to order the Waterloo battlemap for Australia?… |

Here is another Cigar Box update on the Waterloo map. This video shows more detail and shows it being used with the Blucher rules. More on the Waterloo Map |
TodCreasey | 31 Mar 2015 4:22 a.m. PST |
The main issue for me is the place names screenprinted on the map – that means no reuse. It is a good generic battlefield I could use for all sorts of games but I am not sure I want to use it for a one shot scenario. |
monger | 31 Mar 2015 10:34 a.m. PST |
I would just lay some terrain over the towns, etc. |
Old Contemptibles | 31 Mar 2015 5:52 p.m. PST |
I like their generic mats. I can use my own terrain. The mats that are for specific battles would have to be almost custom made. Knowing what rules are being used. If I was making these I would not do any for a specific rule set, scale or battle. You can sell those to anyone. The last video said it would be good for NB, I don't see that at all. I do own several of there generic mats but I have no need of the specific scale, rules or battle mats. Geo-Hex mats had their logo on them too. They faded over time and were never an issue. |

I am not convinced by this, having resisted the "ooh shiny" moment. The basic premise seems good, but the roads look grossly out of scale for such a large scale map. If I am to play Blucher with the brigade area cards, then I think I would be prepared to play without such tactical features as roads. SO as is, it seems to be a bit of a mix up between something that would probably work well for 15mm tactical games (roads and general prettiness) and something designed for brigade level grand tactical gaming. I think I will sticj to recreating my own boards. |

Meh! Logos, road detail, such minor gripes. Geez, there are some pessimists out there! When I first saw this product I thought, wow, what a neat idea and it looks so beautiful!! All too often we concentrate on painting our figures so well that we don't have time to make the backdrop look half-way decent. How many examples can I think of where shabby terrain let down brilliantly painted miniatures?? And I am frequently guilty of this common pitfall, particularly when I'm trying to organise a week-night battle at our club. With a battle mat such as this the major attraction for me is to be able to throw down Waterloo (in minutes!!) with a battle map and Blucher unit cards. I can fit it all in a small bag. This is the ultimate portable wargame! The only thing causing me hesitation is the prohibitive postage costs from the US to Australia. |

Well, I succumbed to the "ooh shiny" moment and ordered one. I recently bought Blucher and the 100 Days cards, so this will be an easy way to commemorate the bicentennial. Plus, I gamed on a Cigar Box European mat at a recent convention and it was a very high quality product. I agree with the comment about the place names, I kind of wish these weren't printed on the mat. This won't stop me from using it for other battles and other periods, though. The logo in the corner doesn't really bother me. |

I am running the Bicentennial Waterloo event at Texicon June 26-28 and will be using the Waterloo mat if I get my order received in time. Fingers crossed and personally I thought that the mat looked very good and would be perfect for running a convention game… Frank |
