So, Roger, Darrellv and I had decided to do an AWI game tonight with Roger picking the scenario, me supplying the figures and Darrell running the game.
Roger chose Oriskany, and I had about 90 Indians.
Darrell did the math, and it came out with 4 Indian units of 12 or 13 figures and one Tory unit of 16 figures. The Patriots had 4 units of 12 and a 4 figure Indian skirmisher unit.
We had 6 guys show up.
Hmmmmmm…..
This means that each player had either 1 or 2 units to command.
All had a morale grade of 1, being militia or worse. Indians had 2 commanders, Cornplanter or Joseph Brant, Master Mason.
Interesting. Usually when we play Age of Reason you have a Brigade of 4 or 5 battalions. One can afford to sacrifice a battalion or two. THIS TIME, if you had only one unit, you have nothing to sacrifice!
With militia, you must roll a one on a d^ to charge. We gave both Cornplanter and Joseph Brant a one time Jacobite roll, meaning a charge declaration needed a 5.
However, almost every time a charge was declared, the charger rolled a 1 or 2 with attached commander!
Sadly, not only General Herkimer died in battle (historically) but also Joseph Brant and every other commander except Cornplanter.
Johnson's Greens not only got Johnson killed, but rolled a 1 on their very first morale test. Being militia grade, bye bye.
It was a very bloody battle, and we all had a good time.
Fascinating how having only one unit affects your tactics. Rolling 1s to charge helps too.
Being militia, you can't shoot and you can't fight, but we succeeded in killing a lot of figures.
