"SMS Lützow was one of the participants in the Battle of Jutland, in 1916, and suffered damage so severe in that conflagration, that she had to be scuttled. Lützow was built in Danzig, and was launched less than a year before the world was set alight with what was to become known as The Great War. She was a product of the times, when countries were rearming in order to produce a visible deterrent to possible aggressor nations which joined the highly emotive stage of European politics of this time. SMS Lützow was a battle-cruiser that had a displacement of 26,000 tons, a length of 690 feet, and a beam of 95ft. She was certainly an impressive vessel for the time, and bristled with 26 guns of various calibres, and also carried tube-launched torpedoes. She was partially commissioned in 1915, with full service commission being granted in March 1916. Her short service life saw her engage in furious action against several enemy vessels and being a part of their destruction, before herself being badly damaged at the Battle of Jutland. When she was scuttled, her service life was only around 3 months. Her wreck is now a designated war grave due to the battle fatalities than had to be left on-board when she was abandoned…" link Main page link Amicalement Armand |
