Is there a WWII ruleset that seems to get less notice in the hobby than it should? |
Mute Bystander | 27 Mar 2015 2:44 p.m. PST |
NUTS! NUTS – War Against Japan NUTS – Fire in Korea All the WW2 supplements/add-ons. And the weird war versions. |
snodipous | 27 Mar 2015 2:49 p.m. PST |
I don't think Nuts is overlooked – it has a lot of adherents, at least around here. Operation Squad is a great skirmish-level game (about a section per side, max) that almost nobody I game with has ever heard of. |
Mute Bystander | 27 Mar 2015 2:57 p.m. PST |
snodipous, I was looking at my local scene only. |
Wolfhag | 27 Mar 2015 3:01 p.m. PST |
I'd say Panzer War. It's a good rule set with a lot of accuracy. I don't know why more people don't play it. Maybe because it has no eye candy? Too many charts? Panzer is pretty good too. It's much better than Tractics and just as detailed and accurate. I think it's as good or better then the Panzer rules put out recently by GMT. My opinion is most tank to tank combat games have the ROF too abstracted. Panzer and Panzer War allow more than one round to hit with one die roll taking range and ROF into account. Both have good hit location and armor value rules for different aspects if that's important to you. Wolfhag |

Battlefront: WW2, from the folks at Fire and Fury. |
pzivh43 | 27 Mar 2015 3:27 p.m. PST |
Battlegroup Kursk (and its supplements) have some enthusiastic players, but is the Rodney Dangerfield of WW2 rules---they just don't get no respect! But a few friends and I have plans to change that at Historicon in July. Stay tuned for more details! |
Ed the Two Hour Wargames guy | 27 Mar 2015 3:38 p.m. PST |
NUTS isn't in many retail shops at this time and is limited to direct online sales. But will be in major distribution when Lock n Load Publishing starts to produce it. |
Weasel | 27 Mar 2015 4:03 p.m. PST |
Overlooked? I'll toss my vote for Face of Battle. Nuts is in a bit of a weird spot of being one of the biggest indies but as Ed says, it's mostly an online phenomenom (so far :) ) |
ubercommando | 27 Mar 2015 4:04 p.m. PST |
I'd say I Ain't Been Shot Mum is the one that often gets no respect….and it gets dissed by people who've never played it. It's a terrific game but the moment you say the words "card driven turns" some players switch off. |
Dynaman8789 | 27 Mar 2015 4:36 p.m. PST |
I have not noticed any! (insert "Boos" here). |

Crossfire So innovative with initiative and no need for tape measures or rulers. I also feel that Crossfire is a superior game to introduce to non-gamers and to kids getting started. Very easy to understand and pick up. Mike |

Cross of Iron. Just at the verge of the release of their Berlin supplement they vanished, never to be heard from again, into the Bermuda Triangle of wargame rules. Their Yahoo Group faded even before Yahoo Groups became last years news. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |
Weasel | 27 Mar 2015 7:10 p.m. PST |
Crossfire is one of the best games I've ever played but my impression was that it's pretty well known. |
Chuckaroobob | 27 Mar 2015 8:40 p.m. PST |
Disposable Heroes is sadly overlooked. |
nickinsomerset | 28 Mar 2015 3:19 a.m. PST |
Panzermarsch, superb set of rules, Tally Ho! |
Buckeye AKA Darryl | 28 Mar 2015 3:46 a.m. PST |
Command Decision, the first edition. Allowed us to run battalion sized forces with ease, completing 15 minute game turns in…15 minutes! Every edition after that just seemed to break down more and more. |
Wargamer Blue | 28 Mar 2015 3:54 a.m. PST |
Disposable Heroes and Crossfire. Can't make up my mind which one to pick. |
Dynaman8789 | 28 Mar 2015 5:37 a.m. PST |
I thought CD2 worked just fine, CD3 on the other hand was a nightmare. Most likely would have been fine without the handoff rules. The latest version (Test of Battle) is easily playable in the 15 minute time frame but now I am a Fistful of Tows Junkie (and that should get more recognition). I could also put Schwere Kompanie in the running. |
David Manley | 28 Mar 2015 6:50 a.m. PST |
Action Stations :) I think WW2 coastal forces gaming definitely needs more recognition! |
christot | 28 Mar 2015 7:02 a.m. PST |
Another vote for battlefront WWII. Seem to have fallen by the wayside recently in the face of a number of dumbed down competitors |
Some Chicken | 28 Mar 2015 7:04 a.m. PST |
Panzer Marsch! and Battlefront WW2 have both been mentioned already but stand repeating as they are great sets which get far less attention than they deserve. Also the almost forgotten Overlord, which has some very good ideas and never seems to get even a hint of a mention on TMP. |
Fire at Will | 28 Mar 2015 8:29 a.m. PST |
Rapid Fire is still going strong but hardly any mention in the Wargaming press until last month |
Just Jack | 28 Mar 2015 8:33 a.m. PST |
Once, twice, and three times 5Core Company Command! V/R, Jack |
Texas Jack | 28 Mar 2015 9:26 a.m. PST |
I would say anything that is not Bolt Action and Flames of War I agree with Fire at Will about Rapid Fire, and I also think Blitzkrieg Commander II should have more respect, despite or because of its quirkiness. |
aegiscg47 | 28 Mar 2015 10:38 a.m. PST |
Arc of Fire, which is a pretty good set of rules, but never gained a lot of traction. |
zoneofcontrol | 28 Mar 2015 11:39 a.m. PST |
Flames of War. With just a few minor provisos… Core rule book could use an update, could stand to add some supplemental folios, model and figure range is rather limited, needs to be expanded. |
Decebalus | 28 Mar 2015 12:48 p.m. PST |
I would have said Crossfire, but after it got a new print, it bis obviously not fogotten. So Abteilung by Peter Pig. I love simple rules, so Abteilung fits my bill. |
D A THB | 28 Mar 2015 2:45 p.m. PST |
I hardly ever hear TWAT mentioned. I still use it occasionally. |
rtaylor | 28 Mar 2015 6:53 p.m. PST |
Kampfgruppe Commander II by David Reynolds, available on lulu.com. It does a good job of modeling differences in troop and command quality. |
Weasel | 28 Mar 2015 7:33 p.m. PST |
Certainly another vote for TW&T. It astounds me that people speak very fondly of IABSM but it's little sister seems to have gone by mostly unnoticed. I guess now, Chain of Command overshadows it. |
Norman D Landings | 29 Mar 2015 4:08 p.m. PST |
"Look Sarge, No Charts: WWII" Great pedigree, full of good ideas, zero interest anywhere. |

I hardly ever hear TWAT mentioned. ….but it's little sister seems to have gone by mostly unnoticed. Is somebody being funny here? |
christot | 30 Mar 2015 11:07 a.m. PST |
I was going to post something concerning the relative merits of the lardies sets..and just COULDN'T…._ |
Fatman | 30 Mar 2015 11:43 a.m. PST |
Mobius No Weasel is making a very valid point IABSM is very popular, rightly so in my opinion, but TW&T seems to be largely ignored. Now as they are very similar sets just aimed at different force levels, company for I Aint Been Shot Mum and platoon for Troops Weapons and Tactics, you would think that fans of IABSM would be just as fond of TW&T but this doesn't seem be the case. Now as Weasel states CoC, another platoon level game, is even more popular than IABSM but even before it came out TW&T didn't seem to get people excited. Personally I love TW&T have played it ever since it came out and continue to do so. Fatman |

"TW&T (aka censored) didn't seem to get people excited. Personally I love TW&T (aka censored) If you don't realize what you are saying it's even better. I'm dying laughing out here. |
Thomas Thomas | 30 Mar 2015 2:24 p.m. PST |
Good points about Command Decision a great game system that went down hill with each new edition (though I agree that CD III was worse than IV – Test of Battle). CDIII drove off so many players and left only those who wanted the extra busy work of CDIII. Perhaps appeals to the author on the CD page will rekindle a back to basics edition. TomT |
DaveyJJ | 30 Mar 2015 8:09 p.m. PST |
Poor Bloody Infantry. I feel too many diss the idea of squares (to not lose their precious rulers) without actually playing a game and finding how how good it actually is. |
BobGrognard | 30 Mar 2015 8:36 p.m. PST |
I thought the advertising line went "if you like Tw&T, you'll love CoC". |

Battlegroup Kursk (and its supplements) have some enthusiastic players, but is the Rodney Dangerfield of WW2 rules---they just don't get no respect! Priceless… Im getting Woz to put that in our next advert!

Fatman | 31 Mar 2015 6:26 a.m. PST |
Mobius Ah sorry small misunderstanding I thought we were adults having a conversation about rules my bad. By the way I would think that if you refer to a ladies "Troops Weapons & Tactics" . I shall now go back to talking about rules you enjoy whatever it is you are doing. Fatman |
Fatman | 31 Mar 2015 6:32 a.m. PST |
Battlegroup are a very good set of rules I have played them and would happily do so again. However I didn't enjoy them enough to pull me away from the Lardies systems. Piers if you use it in your advert I hope you credit pzivh43 in the small print. Fatman |
Weasel | 31 Mar 2015 8:25 a.m. PST |
I wasn't intending to make a pun, for a change :) But Fatman is right. I thought "TROOPS, WEAPONS AND TACTICS" was fantastic and never really got into IABSM too much. Just the wrong scale of game for me. I was surprised to see how much it seemed to pass the gaming community by. There were a few things I'd have liked to see different (I liked how the initiative cards were done in their Vietnam and WW1 games better) but I thought it was great. |
