Howdy,
Turn by turn summary of the "Skirmish" at Harrisonburg. Played using Battalion Scale, Volley & Bayonet. Thanks to Jim Nevling for running the battle.
Results from Harrisonburg:
Turn 1. CSA went first. Pushed up and through Harrisonburg in road column. USA entered and deployed lead brigade on top of big ridge, rest of Bohlen coming up in support.
Turn 2. CSA deployed W of Harrisonburg. USA deployed further on ridge. Initial brigade went stationary.
Turn 3. Scott entered and moved west. USA Steinwehr entered. Gun first, to center of line on ridge limbered behind infantry. Steinwehr's brigade deploys towards the woods S of the ridge. (73rd PA is the only M5 unit on Federal side).
Turn 4. Scott deploys towards the woods SW of Harrisonburg, fully formed into line. Connor waits. USA brings gun to south end of ridge and scores lucky hit on 44th VA. 73rd PA into woods with 29th NY echeloned to the right rear.
Turn 5. Scott sidles left, to just outside the woods, but facing NW toward Federals. Connor waits. Anderson marches on and heads through Harrisonburg to the North. Johnson, the gun and the cavalry enter with them. Federals advance 73rd PA and 29th NY to musketry range of 58th VA and inflict a hit.
Turn 6. 58th and 52nd VA charge 29th NY and 73rd PA respectively. 58th is M4 and goes disordered. 52nd is M6 and doesn't. Both Federals pass morale. 73rd PA inflicts two hits on 52nd VA and wins. 58th VA (despite being in disorder) inflicts two hits on 29th NY and wins. Anderson and the cavalry move north of Harrisonburg and start to head West toward the woods north of the ridge. Connor, holding with tradition, waits. Federals rally the 29th, pull back the 73rd PA into the woods. 54th NY (Poorly Trained) pulls out of line to get a head start on withdrawal. Gun limbers and moves into reserve in center.
Turn 7. Scott pushes further west to stretch the Federals. Connor advances alongside Anderson but halts just outside rifle range. Anderson and the cavalry move deeper around the Federal left. Federals, seeing that they couldn't avoid being double enveloped, fall back per instruction, ceding the field but keeping the force intact. No Confederate unit has line of sight as they back off the ridge and out of the south woods, and the Federals will make a clean getaway.
Final casualties (prior to regrouging): CSA 4 (44th VA 1, 52nd VA 2, 58th VA 1) USA 2 (29th NY)
I'll aim to post pictures later in the week.
Note: The player running the Rebs, was also running them at the two Staunton battles. Particularly at 2nd Staunton he got chewed up badly going straight at stationary Federals, and that experience influenced the very tentative behavior of Connor. He could have been much more aggressive but didn't want to take the punishment that would have entailed.
