An interesting insight in to how Vladimir Putin thinks. I think a fear of a popular uprising in Russia is what's driving him.

Well, I suspect he is probably more than a little unnerved by Maidan.

(Paul Harvey voice)…and THAT man was Vladimir Putin.

Incredible! East Germany was a satelite state of Russia. Russia is a satelite state of … well nowhere its just Russia.

Putin's popularity rating is 80% plus as of BBC News today. No if's no but's he is genuinely popular with Russians.

Yeah he fears a popular uprising. I wonder if the slogan would be "Back to Yeltsin!".

Given that you might be thrown into the gulag, or worse, if you said you didn't like Putin, I suspect that number may be more than a little inflated.

Tsars tend to be a bit paranoid when not being egomaniacal and/or delusional. Just as well comrade Putin isn't a Tsar – can I go now?

You keep saying that Mako11 but there is good evidence that Putin is very popular with Russians. I doubt any serious analyst is saying anything to the contrary.

From a Russian point of view its easy enough to understand why. Put yourself in the other fellow's shoes.
